This was pretty eyes opening. We have 8 players on NFL rosters. Ohio St has 54. Maryland has double what we have I think. Recruiting ratings do not aopear to be accurate as we have consistently finished between 20-25 on average for awhile.

Our talent is not keeping pace...
 
This inconvenient fact is often overlooked among all the blackshirts, single digits, preseason award watch lists, and player profiles proclaiming the next breakout star.

A good counterbalance to all the koolaid that flows this time of year.

Well said.... I however admit to gulping gallons of it every pre-season until the rubber meets the road. Could this season be different? I sure hope so.....

When I said this years ago I was told we need good college players not pro players.
I still evaluate just like I always have, you start with all conf players. If you're not dominating those numbers you're likely not a dominant team.
When I saw so many teams in the B1G ahead of us, I pointed that out as well.
now here we are.

Recruiting rankings are more influenced by subscribers, than actual talent.

Higher ratings for schools with more subscribers: more clicks. More $$.

I agree with the spirit of your point, that the talent level hasn't been good enough. But I put a lot more stock into the NFL draft numbers and the players on pro rosters. Preseason watch lists are a little too tied to the media hype machines. In the NFL, they're going to take whoever is good enough to help you win.

Nebraska's lack of NFL talent over time is a reflection of where the program has been.

But there has been SOME NFL talent, and I see increasing numbers of players who look like they can break into the pro ranks in the high school players that are either committed or are sniffing around.

Listening to our DC RA, they watch the tape, have the measurables, then they meet to see if it's the right guy.
A lot of wrong guys imo from other coaches.

At this point I would like to be back to where we were in the 70s. Clean football, dominate the LOS, defense. I thought that was what we were getting with Rhule. I like Rhule. I am not calling for his firing. But the offensive and defensive lines were supposed to be what he was about.

Not so far.

I agree Doc. Callahan was best buddies with one of those recruiting gurus whose name escapes me (Chicago ties). I always thought politics played some part.

Now, more than ever, we need to establish an identity and frickin stick with it.

We have had some very good players and good players not stay. WanDale, Spielmann, even Raiola come to mind. Granted we have had some good ones come to us (Tre Palmer, Samari Toure, Hunter appears to be a star in the making, etc.) through the portal as well.

Maybe this is the year we break through. EJ broke through last year. GBR!

His DC and DL hires were very bad last year. The "they coached in the league" didn't hold water, never saw it translate to the college level.
OL, well, we get 2 for 1 didnt pan out either.
