A friend of a friend of mine is a gentleman named Bill Bobbora, who graduated my high school and played OL at Nebraska 1985-89. During the recruitment process, Coach Osborne allegedly told him something along the lines of "You'll play on the freshman team your freshman year, redshirt your sophomore year, special teams and 2 deep your redshirt sophomore year, alternate and special teams your junior year, and start your senior year."

That's about how it worked out I believe. A system that worked, but a system whose time has passed. Canning Solich crashed the system maybe 15 years early.

Doc... the discussion wasn’t about Neb getting TOP TALENT which I never indicated. It was about Nebraska has been getting talent rated in the Top 40% of the BIG. We aren’t beating teams like IA and Minn where we consistently got higher rated talent according to the ratings. The chart I posted CLEARLY shows that’s accurate statement. So no we aren’t getting the talent of teams like MU, OSU and Oregon but landed plenty of talent to beat teams like IA, IL, Minnesota. It’s one thing to get that talent and another to develop it imo. Again the posted chart clearly shows that’s what has been happening. IMO it’s been sub-standard coaching to be kind.

Aren’t all teams faced with retention issues from the portal? My guess is that sort of evens out between programs over time. I contend we’ve had some unacceptable coaching, hence unnecessary losses the past several years. Huskers had more talent than they displayed in many of those games imo. Perhaps Rhule has straightened out many coaching issues with all the new staff members?
We’ll just have to watch how that plays out this season. It’s time to stop giving games away in the 2nd half and especially the 4th quarter.

Since 2016. It goes beyond the portal.
And as I've said several times, I'll say it again, getting highly ranked players late in the process has been a disaster, there's a reason why much more logical teams for a prospect backed off yet we "got him".
A lot of them ended up never playing at all, yet was counted in the shown numbers .
Thats a coaching character flaw in recruiting , a distraction to the team, and a waste of time and space on the team that can harm the teams overall character imo, not just poor development, which it harms as well.

I agree that this has been something of a problem, but it has been happening for a long time.

I'd say taking a flyer on talented guys late has been a problem all the way back to BP's last couple of years. He was picking up a lot of guys in the last couple of weeks before signing day.

It's not just guys that might be a problem either. It's taking guys that are super athletes, but aren't necessarily football players. Lots of guys out their in that 6'4-6'6 range that are pretty good athletes but have their first love be basketball. But, they aren't quite D1 basketball material so they go the football route. You can't always teach someone to be a great football player just because they are athletic. You have to love the game, or at least like the game to be good at it.

Bo wasn't great at recruiting, though he was very good at it, but could develop. Riley one step down both categories.
Get to Frost, needed plug n play or it wasnt happening.

Can we agree there’s been a serious coaching deficit at Nebraska for a long time? We’ve had some pretty good players move on to other programs imo. It all starts with good coaching at every position on good teams. My hope is Rhule has made good hires lately and it will show up this season.... GBR

Yep. From 1000 miles away, it seems like the new assistants (including DC) this year are a step up from anyone in the last 11 years (minus a few stars like Ekeler & B Busch). I have less confidence in Rhule as a "leader of men" than I did 3 years ago, but I'm banking on the fact (hope) that the collection of assistants is exactly the group we need to achieve the next level.

With most games being one score games save for the teams which will blow us out (OSU, Indiana, Oregon) the impact of ST on field position and scoring opportunities is immense.
This is the single biggest change from last year and worth art least two wins, just ask Iowa, they count on ST for two or more wins each season.

TURNOVERS
Halftime adjustments

HCMR is 66-62 and 2-22 against Top 25 teams.
He made major changes this off season in his coaching staff and team so if ever there was a chance to change both of these stats (.500 coach, not able to beat Top 25 teams) this needs to be the year he shows he knows how to do those things.

Why are you saying Rhule decided to get rid of Ekeler? He offered him a giant extension that Ekeler rejected. The dude obviously wanted to move, and that is consistent with his historical pattern. He’s a rolling stone.
