UCLA Week Practice Thread: 31 October Coach Rhule

I never said he wasn't. for all the good to great plays he seemingly makes at times, he's a liability at critical times on defense. i won't debate this further if you disagree.
In what sense is he a liability? Of course, he’s not perfect and he doesn’t make every play, but is he truly a liability compared to our other starters in the defensive backfield? He’s small, and sometimes appears to be overmatched by larger receivers and tight ends, but I see him make a lot of plays that other guys aren’t really making.

Charles is bigger and more athletic, but MH is significantly more experienced, has a knack for getting interceptions and is in the right place at the right time more often than not. You can bet that UCLA will see Charles as the most inexperienced member of the secondary and will try to exploit him. I hope it plays in our favor, but I’m not looking at having one of our top DBs out as a “blessing in disguise”.

Everyone makes mistakes. It's the mistakes that make the situation critical. If he doesn't make a mistake then the situation never rises to the level of critical and no one talks about it.

There are two defenders back there that i would consider liabilities. when i say liabilities, it doesn't mean they suck, or that they are not good players. i'm saying that based on the tape, opponents usually key on them and target them specifically on critical downs because they have a poor history on specific types of routes and alignments. it is what it is - tape doesn't lie.
Would you rather have a player that cleans up well on first and second down, but is known to blow 3rd downs and pressure moments fairly consistently, or a player that will stay consistent through all downs even at a lower ceiling?

Which plays are you thinking of specifically? OSU only converted one 3rd down (IIRC), clearly those 2 players didn't fail in critical spots.

I would rather have someone that's amazing for 2 downs and sometimes fails on 3rd down vs. someone that's just ok on 3 downs.

No matter who it is, Next man up, Charles has been in some games already this season so other than the disappointment of Hatzog not playing, I think we will be fine
Exactly!
It's time to see what's behind Hartzog.
Could be Charles time to shine.
As it relates to Hartzog's play, he is the guy who comes up with the interception's.
Sure, I have seen him blow an assignment but I've often heard defensive back coaches say that CB and Safeties need a short memory.
