I do not understand that logic … fielding it, via the fair catch or the return, guarantees a starting position somewhere between the 5 and 15 … assuming a 10 yard return … split the difference and call it the 10 yard line.

Letting it go into the end zone places the ball at the 25 yard line.

The risk of it being down inside the 5 doesn’t outweigh the reward of getting it at the 25. Fielding it at the 7 or 5 doesn’t mitigate that risk-reward math IMO.

Let’s also recognize that this is college football not the NFL … punting isn’t the science that it is in the NFL

It has more to do with ensuring there is enough room for your own punter to operate normally. Those 5 yards make a huge difference. There is math to support the change in the accepted standard.

Sounding like EJ is going to go pro. We tried with NIL money, enough to match any likely NFL contract but for RB's it's all about getting to your second contract and obviously RB shelf life is very short.

Malachi seemed to be a good kid when he was a freshman, and he put some of his NIL towards community service. Plus he’s 6’5”; I actually wouldn’t mind seeing him come back, if we need a big-bodied receiver, which we do unless Carter Nelson ends up as that guy.

Agreed. Not sure what it is with MC, but he is struggling to find a fit and the field with two teams now. He had a lot of promise and appeared to be a great human. Hope he finds a good fit.
