Toyota Landcruiser sales drop 47% year over year

I am a long time Landcruiser owner, with a 2010 @ 187,000 miles. The Landcruiser has been the flagship Toyota for decades, and it was very expensive. That all changed with the new "Landcruiser" iteration. The latest model is a full $30,000 cheaper than the previous, which means there was a LOT of compromising. Yes, Toyota delivered a "Landcruiser" for the mid $50K range, but you might as well have taken the 4Runner and slapped a Landcruiser badge on it, because styling aside, these have very similar specs and running gear. And that is no disrespect to the 4Runner - it is a well-built vehicle built for the long haul. But it's $10K less than the LC with similar specs.

I think the buying public has figured out Toyota's trick, as sales of the Landcruiser have been cut almost in half in the last year. A friend of mine bought the hybrid variant of the Landcruiser, had it for a week, and returned it and asked for his old truck back. His mpg in the LC was only around 15. I test drove the Lexus variant (GX550) and found it to be pretty bouncy, with a lot of wind noise from the large side mirrors.

I would be curious to hear from any current gen Landcruiser/GX550 owners as to your experience so far.

Wouldn’t the equivalent of the old Landcruisers be the LX600? I’ve never owned either so I could be off base.

Agree that it sucks, Toyota was probably mad that their luxury version took too many sales from the old LC. I love the 80’s style. There’s a beautiful 1986 FJ60 for sale in Fremont. Freeborn Red even. Just beautiful!

The LX600 is the rough equivalent, although it is far more optioned-up than its Landcruiser 300 sibling that is only sold outside of the US. I drove one for a while but couldn't stomach taking a $120K vehicle off pavement.

The US flagship SUV from Toyota used to be the Landcruiser. Now it is the Sequoia. The "new" Landcruiser is priced between the 4Runner and the Sequoia. The Sequoia is a solid vehicle, based on the Tundra platform.
