Tony Davis

Sad day for the NU community.

Favorite memory: Tough Tony mauling the Fl defense in the 4th qtr of the '74 Sugar Bowl and earning MVP.

Fl coaches were invited by TO to visit the facilities and were impressed with NU's weight program. An aside to that was Coach Fisher explaining how they drank an NU concoction to hydrate the players and even gave them the recipe, now known as Gator Aid.

I absolutely loved Tough Tony, the Tecumseh Tornado. As said above, the enthusiasm and gusto he played with has no peer.

Who else here besides me was a member of Tony Davis’s football forum that he helped run (I think mostly from a marketing side) in the late 1990s? It was fun doing some of the online chats with him and interact with him on the forum.

Great memories

That was Osborne's first game as head coach. Humm was out due to injury and Steve Runty started at QB. The year before UCLA had ended our 32 game unbeaten streak (we had a tie with USC in early 1970, so it was a 23 game winning streak). Smoking them was sweet revenge, and we had hoped we'd be back in national title contention.

One of the frustrations in 1972 was the running game; TD missed the season with a knee injury and red-shirted. Another Tony, Anthony Davis at USC had a breakout season in late 1972. He scored six TDs against Notre Dame, two on kickoff returns.

I remember hearing (from my older brother) that an NFL scout had seen a Husker practice in late in 1972 when TD was healthy enough to start practicing and the scout said he had seen "the best back in College Football "Anthony Davis" - at Nebraska!!!"  So we were all looking forward to him playing in 1973! Needless to say it was an auspicious debut against UCLA. That was also probably the only time anyone ever called him "Anthony"!:Lol:
