I don't think that is the case. It isn't being applied to this year's grads. Next year's would be the first it applied to.The only “problem” with that is Andi and the other 3 seniors will likely be getting another year of eligibility. It will be interesting.
I think from what I read it would not be retroactive for those completing their playing career in the 2025/2026 year. I'd think basketball and football would fall into that category but not sure about baseball, softball, or volleyball.I don't think that is the case. It isn't being applied to this year's grads. Of course nothing has been finalized yet so changes could still be made.
Yep. Volleyball players who will graduate in 2027 like Harper Murray, Andi Jackson, Bergen Reilly, and Laney Choboy, would have a 5th year, according to how the proposal is currently worded. Of course, things could change, or it's possible the proposal could not pass. It's still up in the air at this point.I think from what I read it would not be retroactive for those completing their playing career in the 2025/2026 year. I am more worried about Ryan Hunter. She had some struggles in the spring matches, but is still a great talent and hugely liked teammate. I think we will benefit from her on the right a bunch in the fall and want her to stay.I am hoping no one decides to leave. I am most worried about Skyler Pierce and Kenna Cogill. I think either of them could go somewhere else and start right away.
As of 11am CST, no Nebraska players have entered the portal. Hope it stays that way.
Even if they played a full four years without interruption?Yep. Exactly that. The proposed rule says it will: “permit student-athletes up to five years of eligibility beginning the regular academic year after they turn 19 or graduate from high school, whichever happens earlier" Bergen, Andi, Laney and Harper graduated high school in 2023 (before they turned 19), so the academic year following graduation was their 2023-24 freshman year. Five years gives them that year plus 24-25, 25-26, 26-27, and 27-28. I think some of them are graduating this May, so they have two years to work on a grad degree if they wish. The rule applies in every sport.Even if they played a full four years without interruption?
So in the future we'd have Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Grad or whatever they are going to call it.Exactly that. All four have a shot at pro volleyball, but I'm guessing they may be making more money here. What will our seniors do? They seem to have mature responses:
“It's definitely something to think about,” Murray said. “I don't know the possibility of it happening, but it is definitely in the back of our minds if it is possible. I don't have much else to say about it.”
“I'm just taking it one year at a time,” Jackson said. “Just trying to enjoy my senior year.”
If they are eligible to come back and want to, I think Dani will let them stay. The lesson we all learned from Jenn Flynn Oldenburg (JFO) at Ohio State is that you always prioritize proven star players over incoming freshmen. All four have a shot at pro volleyball, but I'm guessing they may be making more money here.
The question may be what will DBK do. While it would be nice to have them back, will it disrupt the team chemistry and could she lose some really good future talent. Do you risk losing a player with three years left for someone with one year left. Do you even have the option to say no you can't come back.
