Time to Go for an Experienced Offensive Staff

I think WR, RB, and ST all need to be upgraded. I’m hoping Holgorsen can stick around as OC/QB coach and help put this puzzle together. I agree with those who say Nebraska shouldn’t be a training ground for coaches—this is a program that needs experienced staff who can hit the ground running. I was really impressed with how Rhule made the necessary OC change, and he did it during the season. Do you think we could see similar quick moves to assemble a new staff and get it done fast for the bowl game preparation, transfer portal, and early signing periods? That might not be possible, but it’s not common to see someone step into a program and take over play calling midseason either.
Query why he made such poor hires in the first place? Yes we're happy that Satt isn't the OC anymore, but it doesn't excuse the fact that Satt was OC for over 1.5 seasons.

The returner has to Communicate to everyone else to stay away that doesn't seemed to have happened, especially concerning in game 12 from a senior returner
In defense of the returner not sure he knew he didn't touch it, but it was just a jacked up play from the beginning. In hind sight he should have not made an effort to catch it.

A few things that came to mind when Coach Rhule initially put his staff together:
  1. Experience and Familiarity: Coach Rhule went with what he knows and hired coaches based on a blueprint from his previous stops where he found success.
  2. Loyalty to Past Players: Rhule has shown loyalty to his previous players, which is likely why Garrett made his way onto the initial coaching staff. The personal connection of Garrett being a former player for Coach Rhule was the reason he is on staff.
  3. Recruiting Focus on Texas: Another reason for some of the initial hires could be Rhule’s desire to strengthen recruiting ties in Texas.
  4. OC Decision: I’ve read that Satt wasn’t Rhule’s first choice for OC, so some of the coaching decisions may not have been part of his original plan.
  5. Consistency Over Change: My guess is that Rhule decided to prioritize consistency with his staff rather than making changes after year one, and the mid-season OC change supports this idea for me.

On the Offensive Coaching and Performance This Season:

In my initial post, I mentioned four key coaching positions, one of which was the OC role. I felt this change was necessary, especially given the struggles with in-game play calling. Here’s a breakdown:
  • Offensive Coordinator: It was clear to me that a change was needed with the lack of progression in QB play and the struggles on offense. DH called a really good game against Wisconsin, a solid game against USC, and an average game against Iowa. All three were improvements compared to how the OC had called games earlier this season.
  • Wide Receivers: The WRs have struggled all year with blocking, and at times, haven’t been able to make contested catches (Banks has solid on the second part all year).
  • Running Backs: The RBs have missed holes and haven’t hit them as quickly as needed at times.
  • Special Teams: While I debated whether to include ST in my list, they have improved throughout the year. I could go either way on this one.

Game Observations:

I don’t have access to what happens in practice, so these are just my observations from the games. If our true freshman QB connects with a few wide-open receivers in about 4 of the 6 games we lost, or if PI calls were more consistent with the games we won this year, I believe the outcome of the L column would have been very different. If those two things happen, Rhule's initial coaching plan looks much better than it currently does.

Reflections on Coach Rhule’s Approach:

When a new coach is hired, they do their best to assemble a staff based on what they know has worked for them in the past, while also assessing what needs improvement in the new program. This is difficult when the coach doesn’t have the full picture of the program yet. I believe Coach Rhule’s view of the program today is much different from how he saw it 1.5 years ago.

I’ve supported every coach over the last five attempts to turn the program around, and I’m still a fan. However, my support starts to fade when a head coach doesn’t make adjustments to their staff, which has been a recurring issue with previous head coaches. What’s different with Coach Rhule is that he’s shown he is willing to assess and make necessary adjustments for the betterment of the program and the players. If he sticks with the coaches I mentioned earlier, I’ll be fine with that because his perspective is likely different from what I see on Saturdays. If they all stay and Satt goes back to OC, my support will start to fade.

Sorry that I don't have time to answer all of your points, but thanks for sharing them.

Re Satt, I get it that he wasn't Rhule's first choice. But when you're hiring for an important position and your top candidate isn't available, that doesn't mean you go out and hire the village idiot.

The fact the Rhule had previously worked with Satt makes it even worse. If Rhule grasped that Satt is the village idiot, then it was disloyal to NU to hire him as OC. Or, if Rhule worked with Satt and didn't recognize that he's the village idiot, then it speaks poorly of Rhule's ability to evaluate coaching talent.

Worse still, Satt crapped the bed his entire first season as OC at NU, and yet Rhule kept him in that position for more than half a season. As a result, we lost multiple games this year that we would have otherwise won.

Sorry if my initial post was a bit long—I’m a longtime lurker and just have a few things to get off my chest after reading this message board for the last 20 years. I see that you feel strongly about Satt, and it’s clear you view him as the 'village idiot,' which helps clarify your perspective for me. I didn’t think it was the best hire either, but I wouldn’t go as far as to categorize him that way. Thanks for the conversation!

I’m not sure Satt has been overly involved in the offense the past couple of weeks buts he’s definitely the message board scapegoat

a new OC is coming and significant changes will be made on offense. i wouldnt expect most of the O staff to be back next year.

It would be a huge mistake if they don't overhaul to offensive staff. Reminds me of SF picking his pals and not picking the best available pieces of the puzzle.

I would like to know who else Rhule could have hired after Peetz backed out. And don't tell me 'anybody he wanted to' because we all know that isn't true. With the timing of it all and needing someone quickly, Rhule turned to someone familiar. Nobody was wowed by the Satterfield hire so let's not pretend that is true either. Judging an OC based on last season's injuries in the QB room is also tough to do. Now judging the same OC on this year's pathetic offensive showing with new QB and upgraded receivers, it's all fair game. Noone is happy with how the first nine games unfolded offensively, try finding someone who is. Coming off like you knew that Satterfield was the 'village idiot' from day one is more hindsight than anything. Gets tiring reading some of the trash on these boards. Several on here have probably suffered shoulder injuries recently from patting themselves on the back so much because they knew some of this FIRST... @Red Dead Redemption sound about right?
