Thoughts on the portal class so far?

When I see these numbers, I always divide them by the number of players in that room. Two wrs, 5 OL etc

At least we hired an OL coach early on in the cycle so he could competently go after his group. We decided to wait until bowl season is over and the transfer portal is closing to bring in a DL coach from a mid level MAC school where he couldn't even bring his own transferring players in (also our biggest area of need).

It will b interesting what caliber of player Geep et al can bring in, make the 27 class phenomenal

Do I think we got decent to good players? Sure. Do I think we got upper end of the portal guys? No, I don't... at virtually every position we went after. Only Black was listed as a T10 player at his position by 247. Every other commit we had was in the teens or 20s at their highest compared to their transferring piers. I think Chambliss is underrated with high upside. The QB could go either way, but I liked him more than Minchey. I suspect the safety is a starter due to experience with the system but I could also easily see him getting beat out by Benning at some point next year.

I want, and hope, that they will all be great next year and I fully suspect we'll get a few Andrew Marshall's in the mix who just needed an opportunity at the bigger stage, but I wish we could've gotten more proven production and upper end P4 talent, personally.
I think the hidden gem of the class may be the long snapper. Hopefully by the end of next season no one can remember his name because he's done such a good job. We've seen what happens when you have long snapper problems, hopefully getting the #1 long snapper in the portal pays off.

On Rhule's Sports Nightly comments around RB, and just the portal haul/money management in general here are my thoughts:

1) Sometimes I wish Rhule would just be more careful with his words as saying he had enough money a couple of months ago, then saying now had to make economic decisions doesn't do him any favors

2) I really would like another RB, but if he has to pick a position to be cheap at, I'd prefer it be RB. There's so many examples across college and the pros where if you have a good scheme and a good OL that RB can be kind of plug and play.

3) Seems pretty evident that rate of NIL money required is accelerating faster than Rhule and a lot of others thought. The raise to 35-40 million was probably his dream a year ago, and it's just not the same now.

4) Also seems pretty clear they prioritized using a large part of their budget to prioritize our own guys. The fact that outside of Dylan we only lost Keona Davis and Hartzog as contributors is pretty impressive in this day and age.

5) Overall, I think we tend to underestimate the budget/allocation component of this and get stuck on "they need more high impact guys" or "we should get a RB" and don't see it as an interconnected puzzle where every decision has a cost/benefit that affects other areas even at a budget of 35-40 mil. To me it seems they went in with a clear plan of "value retention, rebuild the QB and LB rooms, build depth on the lines and in the secondary". Now time will tell if it's the right plan, if we chose the right guys, and if we can develop/execute now from a coaching perspective.
The big if is are the people who stayed worth the squeeze?
Hopefully letting that overpriced QB walk who was just not very good will help.
The position of most .need DT was absolutely not addressed. That's 100% Rhule's fault.
Everybody coaches and players alike should be on a short leash this is a business.

I think we did solid in our recruiting class. Had a plan and worked it. Would have been nice to get a RB and a 330 lb DT but you can't win them all.

I think Rhule is adapting to the portal/NIL era in that he is building around a team that can learn in one year and be successful. I think that is some of the appeal of Aurich's defense. Gets kids to play fast pretty quick.

Look at how many teams brought in 30, 40, even 50 new players. Rhule kept our roster in tack for the most part then did a solid job addressing needs given what was available. Quite a few schools didn't fair as well as the Huskers.

This has got to be the craziest off-season ever. The sheer number of coaching changes. Tons of kids in the portal and flipping nearly entire rosters. Heck, flipping even a third of a roster is huge in developing a team.

Kudos to Rhule/Dannen for building a personnel department. A lot of schools didn't have near the resources and were winging it.
