Thoughts on the portal class so far?

I think Rhule thought he had all the money he needed, until he found that other schools had upped the ante.

In this age of pay-for-play (NIL... cough, cough), there isn't much Nebraska can offer the better players other than money. Rhule doesn't have that great of a resume and neither do most of the other coaches on staff (perhaps Holgerson excepted).

We took 16 guys very few schools took anywhere near that

Thus other schools going the ante is highly debatable

As for your second paragraph that's your opinion

Indiana will be an interesting one to see how things go in the future. It's been noted the Indiana players average 23.5 years of age, a much higher average than most teams. The key is, that doesn't mean they are that way because he brings in portal players each year, it means so many players followed him to Indiana and have played together 3, 4, or 5 years. As they graduate they may be replaced with older experienced portal players, but they still won't have the years of playing together.

Is that something that can make a difference, I guess we'll know the answer to that in a few years. In Colorado's case bringing in new portal players all the time didn't seem to help. I believe I read the other day there is one player on their roster from the 2024 class that's still there. I think years of playing together is a big help, especially with OL play.
I wonder that too? How long can he substain this level of production once his current players pass through? He did well replacing his qb!

36 schools took more than 16 commits. The Big Ten alone had 7 teams with more than 16 commits. I am not sure anyone can look at this transfer portal class and represent it as anything more than plugging of holes. I like the QB add as a Dylan replacement but the rest of the guys are largely depth pieces so hopefully our development with all of these new coaches is a lot greater than it's been the last few years.

Normally I'd agree. New coaches, new needs to scheme/fit I couldnt say right now.

So 36 schools out of 132 FBS members or 27%.

Debatable with a new staff.. They are looking to plug certain holes with more experienced players until they can recruit or coach up what was the youngest team in the B1G last year

You were never going to be able to go into the portal and bring in Top talent across the board unless you had a blank check to do so

So your saying the WR from UCLA, the two guys from San Diego State and the LS from Michigan State are just depth guys? Not to mention the young LB out of Iowa State who had 4 years
elgability and was a 4* out of HS.

I think we did pretty good

Good discussion

We have been punching below our weight, even under MR. If you compare our recruiting classes to our win percentage.
Seeing MR change his staff, not just maintaining the status quo, like look another top twenty recruiting class and hope for something different THIS time...
Lets be one of those teams who punch above our weight, do more with less.
We start doing that, and maintain our recruits at a high level, we can be very dangerous.
Nominee for Koolaide Post of 2026.

Sigh, each year I start out wanting to believe this stuff, until I look at what everyone else in the BIG is doing and then, well, you know I see a .500 season again :(

Doing verses getting, not meeting potential. We are slowly getting there, that means not changing the types of guys we're getting, just getting more out o them.
If thats kool aid, then its too much to ask? We are still getting same level of players, but we werent getting .500.
Consecutive two years, 14-12, it been much lower for quite some time. Same level of players, only changes are the coaches.
We have improved this year as well, though our record wont show a big jump over the previous 2 years because we have a pretty tough schedule .
We go 7-5 reg season, same as last year, we have improved quite a bit.

Do I think we got decent to good players? Sure. Do I think we got upper end of the portal guys? No, I don't... at virtually every position we went after. Only Black was listed as a T10 player at his position by 247. Every other commit we had was in the teens or 20s at their highest compared to their transferring piers. I think Chambliss is underrated with high upside. The QB could go either way, but I liked him more than Minchey. I suspect the safety is a starter due to experience with the system but I could also easily see him getting beat out by Benning at some point next year.

I want, and hope, that they will all be great next year and I fully suspect we'll get a few Andrew Marshall's in the mix who just needed an opportunity at the bigger stage, but I wish we could've gotten more proven production and upper end P4 talent, personally.

When I see these numbers, I always divide them by the number of players in that room. Two wrs, 5 OL etc
