Thoughts on next season

I know we're not even 24 hours removed from an incredible - and heartbreaking - championship match, but it's never too soon to look to the future... right?

Foecke and Maloney will be tough to replace for sure, especially as leaders, but I think that Stivrins may end up as an all-time great herself. Having a freshman as a setter this year bodes well for the future, as that may be the most important position on the court. Lexi Sun is getting things figured out, and I hope that Sweet can find a little more consistency.

This is a team that was loaded with young talent. You never assume an appearance in the finals, but there's no reason to expect a big drop off next season.

Women's college volleyball has seriously become my 2nd favorite sport to watch.

Agree with all of this. Especially about Nicklin. She won 5 state championships in High School. 5.

Shes a winner and our QB. She will be an AA for sure.

Setter position is set for years to come. Hames is already a top level college setter as a true freshman.

Foecke was a monster but the Huskers have a lot of outside hitters. Maybe one steps up to be the go-to player or even better, we have many top level options to attack the opposing defense. Sun and Sweet are only sophomores and Davis is a freshman.

Middle blocker is loaded with talent. Stivrins is already one of the best in the nation and Shwarzenback is only going to get better.

That leaves the defensive specialist/Libero position. Maloney will be tough to replace on paper but we have a lot of talent waiting in the wings. Nobody has really gotten a chance to show what they have got because Maloney is so good but:

Densberger, sophomore, was an AAU club All-American.
Megan Miller was on the top AAU team ans the #4 libero recruit in the nation.

Added to all of this is the fantastic recruiting class that includes the #4 and #32 over all recruits who are outside hitters and a libero that is #36 overall and the #3 libero.

This is Nebraska. We will always be in the volleyball conversation.

Volleyball newbie here. Foecke had such a sledgehammer of an arm. Seemed like one of the few players on the team who made points by sheer will.

How are we going to replace THAT?

I think Stivrins has that potential.

Find someone that can dig like Maloney and we are set.
I am guessing Megan Miller. And with coaching from another great libero, Kayla Banwarth, I have faith Megan will become another in the long line of libero's to grace Nebraska's court.

I don't know if we can replace Foecke very easily. She is a rare gem.

With coach Cook - I expect more great things... DONU will be back & motivated by unfinished business. :Nsmilie:

I think Stivrins has that potential.

I don’t personally think so. Lauren has really shined as an attacking Middle, so unless you feel Schwarzenbach will fill that role, and Szabo or one of the new recruits fills Schrarzenbach’s role of the stronger defender, it’s hard to move Lauren outside. Her slide is nearly unstoppable.

On the outside, I don’t think we can truly expect anyone to replace Foecke, but Capri and Jazz both had moments they shined. I’m also not sure who we have redshirting, who might be able to step in and play early. I don’t mean to disparage outside hitters, but they are usually much easier to find than really good middles.

I thought I heard someone say that we have Shwarzenback's little sister in our sights and she's got potential to be even better? Can anyone confirm?

We might have to see if any of the coaching staff has had a chance to talk to that one farmer who knew of another farmer whose farmer friend has seen her play. :p

Good point on Stivrins in the middle, and that slide is pretty nasty. She would have to prove herself as a full-time player (back row) if she moved outside. I do think that Schwarzenbach can be a good middle, so it may be an option?

Davis and Sweet both need to gain a little more consistency. As the season went on, it seemed to me that Cook was much more comfortable with Sun (once she got through her injury) than he was with Sweet. That was a surprise to me.

We might have to get a little more creative since we don't have a clear direct replacement for Foecke's arm, but there's an awful lot of development that can occur between now and next fall.
