TO was one of the greatest CFB HC's ever...there really is no need to embellish his accomplishments over his mentor.

It's an interesting discussion - Devaney built a very average football team into a giant, and had massive success in a short period of time. Also had a couple 6-4 seasons in the middle of his run. IMO, the perfect coach to built a team to great heights, but would have had more ups and downs over an extended run - but with those highs being top-of-the-world. That's a bright flame.

Osborne's ability to maintain excellence without exception over 25 years is its own type of greatness unequaled in college football history, and not even many comparisons across all of sports. Also took him a bit to crack through a ceiling that was above 95% of coaches, but below Devaney's for a while. Once he got there, the 5 year run he went on was probably the best stretch in college football history, when you take into account the historical context of the various great teams.

2 different types of greatness, happy to have had them both at NU.

As for 5 games, I'll just say the 94 Orange Bowl vs FSU is an absolute must on my list as it was without a doubt the catalyst for 94-97, and completely changed the tone overnight in how Nebraska was viewed during that era.

I was at that game with my dad, brother, cousins and uncle. We drove away saying this was going to on SC non-stop and it was. Crazy game....which was just on the B1G last night.

I don't know how you can say he didn't elevate it. It's not diminishing what Devaney did by stating that Osborne had a level of consistent excellence that has never been seen in the modern era of football.

100% agree on your whole post. One could argue till the end of time on which was more difficult; winning that first one or the ability to have 25 years of consistent excellence and then to top it off by having arguably the most dominant 5 year period in the history of CFB including 3 National champions. We have been blessed with two outstanding coaches. So I am going to celebrate that

Okay - I'll choose to write it like this: 60-3 over five seasons, 3-1 in championship games. That's the same number of NC's as losses. The Bobfather was great, but you can't slice his career to come up with an accomplishment like that.
 
Thing is, The Bobfather would give more great quotes in one week than Dr. Tom did in 25 years. And that's not counting the one's his players say they couldn't share.

As was I. As we've both probably discussed before.

Granted, I was only 9 -- but at that age, and living in Lincoln, I had a full grasp of Cornhusker football. And I feel certain that Memorial Stadium has never been louder than that '78 NU-OU game. One of my many memories of that game is walking over to the student union postgame, by the fountain, and watching fans sawing the goalposts into pieces.
