The good the bad and tbe ugly UNI edition

As we get better, we're getting better against teams that are also.
While its good to move on, we are getting better against improving teams which shouldnt be swept under the rug.
Beating a decent Illini team is another step this team needs to make. We do that, we've earned every bit of ground we stand on.

The turnover thing is huge. I still disagree with the one we did have. That was the text book definition of a dual possession. Both had control till they hit the ground. Tie goes to offense.
Wrong.
Lloyd never really had full control. The ball was still moving around in his arms and chest. Then at one point right before they hit the ground, the UNI player had the ball pinned to Lloyd's stomach, but both of Lloyd's arms were extended and not even touching the ball. After they hit the ground, the UNI player had most of the possession. The refs made the right call.

 3-0 for the first time since 2016.
 4 for 4 in the red zone (though I'd rather have TDs instead of FGs against FCS teams.)
 Raiola continues to impress. Have to wonder how different this team would be without him.
 First half vs second half - tale of two cities.
 Gave up 3 first downs on penalties.
 Their TOP was insane.
 They had no 3 and out until the 4th quarter.
 Stupid second half penalties that will hurt us badly in close games.

Overall, I was disappointed with this game, mostly because of sloppy play in the 2nd half. We're 3-0 but still haven't played a full game, IMO.
Add conservative play calling in the 2nd half, just like last week.

There was no late hit out of bounds. The penalty is to protect people that don’t expect to be hit, because they are out of bounds, from getting hit. Our tackler hit the guy in bounds, didn’t intentionally run the ball carrier into danger and finished the tackle as he would have on the field. Referees just like to insert themselves into the action. I think we’ve seen too much of that this season.

I want to start by saying. Some of these things are relative. So don't take the ranking personally.

Th good: our first half offense was fantastic. We pretty much moved the ball at will. Our D was good 8n the red zone.

The bad: our rush D in between the 20s. If we can not stop the run better than that next week we will be in trouble. Their backs were good but we need to be better at first contact.

The Ugly: Penalties. Especially stupid ones. Can not be tackling guys that far out of bounds. Can not go out of control at the kicker.

Overall I would give all three phases today a B minus. We won. We won convincingly but it was ugly.
Agreed on all counts. I expected this game to be a pretty comfortable win, and while it was, it wasn't super impressive. Defense has to do a better job wrapping up and tackling. Too many guys just trying to bump players down. For a team that was as good as we have been at stopping the run, I was stunned we looked so lousy Saturday. Hopefully a wake up call and things look better moving forward.

I still think we are going to end up losing a game we probably shouldn't. I was actually a little glad DR had his first INT in this game, just to get that out of the way.

Missing Gbayor in the first half hurt our Run D. We probably had a 3 man rotation at MLB going into the season and yesterday only one of those 3 played in the FH

Agree, playing at halftime and only a portion of that half MG was second on the team in tackles.

It seems that we start out runnning the ball pretty well and then we seem to get away from it. Still not a fan of Sat.
It's either that and put HH back in or DR rots on the vine or leaves.
The mix of run/pass has been good until we call off the dogs. And we arent passing that much really.
104 rushes 92 passes. We knew having DR was going to change the run/pass ratio, as it has, but we still run slightly more than throw.
I dont think Haarbergs missed a pass this year, DR is over and almost 75%.
This is a problem for opposing D's.

I am not sure what you are complaining about, moving away from the run. First Quarter we ran four times and passed seven. We averaged 5.8 yards per rush and 11 per pass attempt, completing 86% (6 of 7). Second quarter we ran five times at 4.8 yards per attempt, were 7 of 9 passing (78%) with 14.5 yards per attempt. Third quarter was seven rush attempts at 6.8 per carry and passing at 4 of 6 (67%) for 38 yards or 6.3 per attempt. Fourth quarter we went six rush attempts and four pass.

Against sCUm I think we were slightly above 50% in pass per rush ratio until the fourth quarter when we went run heavy to burn clock.

I very much would like to see us throw the ball if defenses seem to be trying to stop our running game. The pass definitely seemed pretty open in the first half. I would have to say I was also disappointed that our only incompletions came on consecutive third and fourth down plays (3 yards to gain) and we were low on time, in scoring position and trying to preserve our last time out.

The biggest concern out of this game was our inability to stop the NIU offense and let them hold the ball. We put points up each possession

And yes, I'd rather had another TD or two vs. FGs, but we need work on FG, too. Good news is Alvano hit them.

Illinois five man front is like a blitzer every down, mano o mano. Isoing their LBs will be important, and I've heard mention they arent big, but likely very fast.
Watch for attempts to work the middle in pass, the edges in runs.
We want them to come down with their safeties this game, possibly iso a safety.
