The Collegiate Professional Football League (CPFL) - It is Time

I know this might break a record for post length. This first post is on the new CPFL alignment. I have another write up on the proposed salary cap that I will post early next week. Here is my stab at it. Please do not beat me up too bad.
  • Total of 80 FBS Football Programs. This is a hard limit to ensure financial viability and stability. Networks do not want to pay for 100 plus teams. Some teams could be dropped from the CPFL to FBS-2.
  • To stay in the CPFL schools in lower tier programs would have to maintain a set level of revenue, attendance, and stadiums.
  • Instead of a Commissioner there would be a “Commission” composed of the heads of the eight divisions and a Chief Commissioner. This would allow for 5-4 votes on football policy
  • Teams play a 9 game division schedule and three cross division games based on strength of schedule and previous season record/ranking. Divisions based on region are more fan friendly and allow for travel to games. I miss the days when I was a NU student and we would hop in the car to go to Ames, Manhattan, Columbia, or Lawrence. We were the Hangover before the movie was made. Travel to LA or Piscataway…..NO THANKS. PS - Cal and Stanford in the ACC is RIDICULOUS!
  • Eliminate conference championship games. Division winners do not get automatic bids to the playoffs. A selection committee will identify the top 16 teams for seedings.
  • The first two rounds of games are played in the highest remaining seed’s home stadium. Opening round 1st Saturday December, 2nd Round second Saturday in December, 3rd Round third Saturday in December. Championship 2 weeks later. This will allow for Championship Week like the Superbowl. Rewarding higher seeds with home games through 2 rounds will be more affordable for fans and build excitement.
  • Think of the excitement of Miami having to come to Lincoln in mid-December for a playoff game. I AM THERE!
Now that everything has been laid out here are the proposed divisions. Like, comment, share! GBR!

Not perfect, but not bad. I like what you have with the divisions being more located geographically. It would help with transportation costs.

With 16 team playoffs, I would make the division champs an automatically qualifier. But that may be the only division team that makes the playoffs. Other stronger divisions may have 2, 3, or 4 teams in the playoffs.

Division champions would be decided by the games played within the division. Cross division games would count for or against in deciding of division champion. Cross division games would count in non-champion division teams getting into the 16-team (or more teams, if the powers that be decide someone has an extra dollar that they can get) playoff.

Other than that, I think you have a relatively good plan. I would have to think for awhile for any other changes to move it closer to perfection.

Hope I didn't beat you up too bad. All I ask is you do the same for me. :)

Back when I was a kid shooting hoops in my driveway, I was sure I was going to be the next John Havlicek. This is just as likely.

What this doesn’t address is:
(1) finances,
(2) other sports - how are they funded, organized
(3) player movement,
(4) player pay,
(5) coaches pay
Good questions. I am working on a salary cap post for finances and player movement/eligibility.

I look forward to what you come up with. Player movement and pay will have to be done by contracts, similar to the NFL. Coaches need changes to a lower base salary with bonuses tied to wins, championships, and graduation numbers (if student/athletes are still a thing). Other sports will be decided by the school's priorities.

I know, at present, finances are still working, but I don't believe the financial side will be able to maintain the present trajectory.

Like I said, looking forward to your input.

The finances will equal out when the money runs out.

I agree, money drives everything. I'm guessing a lot of the fans (and supporters of substance) will eventually adjust their priorities. When that happens, college athletics may fall to the wayside.

Of course, I may be wrong.

Do the players have to actually be enrolled in school? Or are they professional athletes with an N ( or team of your choice ) on their helmet?
