Story by Barfknecht in the 12/30 OWH that states that the die hard Husker BB fans are exiting stage left. Good summary. I have worked hard to Like Doc and want him to be sucessfull but he has lost me. Like him, yes, but it is time for a change since he isn't getting it done.

LINCOLN — Doc Sadler is squarely in the hunt for this year's "Man, I wish I hadn't said that" award.
Three weeks ago, after Nebraska needed a basket with 10 seconds left to beat Division I nobody Florida Gulf Coast by one point at home, I asked the Huskers' sixth-year coach about his team's readiness for Big Ten play.
<!-- Zedo tag: begin [ C:"bigred_" S:"300xAny-1" ] -->

"Come the 27th of December, we will be ready. I promise you," Sadler said. "Our guys are too good and have practiced too hard.
"They will be ready to play the best game they have all year."
Gulp.
The 27th of December was Tuesday, a date which could come to live in infamy for Sadler.
Nebraska's 64-40 home loss that night to No. 11 Wisconsin, according to the emails and phone calls I've received since, has become the jumping-off point for some of NU's most die-hard fans.
Longtime friends and acquaintances who have been going to games since the 1970s said that blowout pushed them so far over the edge that they can't come back. And they are telling their friends not to attend anymore, either.
One particularly ardent fan — as eternally optimistic a Husker basketball backer as I've ever met — called from his car to say he was on his way out to eat wearing a Creighton shirt.
It's no secret that some high-profile former players also are growing queasy.
They scratch their heads at the offensive dysfunction. They question the defensive stubbornness. They wonder why Florida Gulf Coast and Central Michigan are more athletic than Nebraska.
Yes, they acknowledge this team has dealt with injuries. But they are adamant that a sixth-year program has had plenty of time to recruit well enough to endure such episodes.
Another cold slap in the face: Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan has told Big Ten friends that he likes his team but that it is one of the lesser-talented groups in his 11 years. Yet the Badgers dismantled 8-4 Nebraska.
For folks to climb off the bus after one conference game seems rash. So let's check some trend lines that might predict reasons to believe or leave:
• Number of wins against teams with winning records. Out of eight, Nebraska has two (11-4 South Dakota State, 8-4 TCU).
• Home losses. Nebraska already has three, and will be an underdog Saturday at the Devaney Center against No. 16 Michigan State. The last time NU lost four home games before New Year's Day? Never.
• The Big Ten statistical rankings. The league tracks 16 major categories. Nebraska is ranked in the top half of the league in two: free-throw shooting (first) and defensive rebounding (third).
That's the worst showing in the Big Ten. Also, the Huskers are 10th, 11th or 12th in eight categories...................

Weird, I wonder why fred didn't post this article?

Would you rather talk about the article or fRed? Why?

LeeBarf states what you all have been reading from me (and attacking me for posting) for the past 3 weeks or so. He is right. this team could have been more successful but has folded nearly every time they have been pushed. I think it was the 2-19 run that Wisc put on NU in the first half Tuesday that best sums up their season so far.

I'll go on record and give the outcome a date: March 10th.

Tough words from LB, and I wonder if TO is paying attention. I didn't think things could get much worse than the 2-14 showing Doc put up in the Big 12 two years ago.

heard Andy Markowski on the radio about a week ago. He was obviously choosing his words carefully. It was so obvious that, after several years of supporting Doc, that he was off the bandwagon.

I suspect fRed...although he will NEVER admit it...has seen enough. It's so painfully obvious the man is completely overmatched it's not even funny. What Doc wants to do is what Wisconsin IS doing. Having had it handed to them BY Wisconsin shows how far they are from where they want to be...it's rather telling.

Thanks for the link Nebugeater. A very disappointing loss indeed to Wisconsin and I find myself leaning towards a coaching change as well.

If MJohnson is leaning toward a coaching change then we know it is all bad as he is the most positive poster ever in my lifetime.:wow:

To be clear, I have said some critical things about Doc so far this season. I do not back down from them now. His comments after the Wisconsin game stating that good teams don't shoot the ball until 10 seconds remain on the shot clock is one of the most perplexing statements I have ever heard any coach make, at any level. I have never heard a coach say that. I have heard sarcastic fans say something to that effect when ridiculing conservative offensive coaches, but I have known conservative offensive coaches who did not appreciate those comments somewhat to the effect of saying, "That is not what my offense is all about. That is not what I said nor is it the focus of my offense." And yet Doc comes out and says it after a tough loss. It concerns me that he has such a philosophy.

Having said that.

We are 0-1 in Conference play. We are missing 3 key players. I am not focused on "fire Doc Sadler" at this point. I believe there is some talent on this team if we can get some people healthy and one of the Freshman or two can surprise. There is still time to turn it around. Do I believe it is going to happen? Not necessarily, particularly given Doc's recent quotes. Am I going to root for it to happen? Yes. I am not going to root for this team to tank. I just am not.

I know that some fans are motivated to root against this team. They don't believe that Doc is the right man to lead the program. They believe that it is in the best interests of the future of the program for Doc to fail so that we can bring in a better coach. I understand this, but I refuse to join in with them right now. I believe that the players deserve better (if not Doc Sadler).

The time to discuss firing Doc Sadler is not now. The time will come if this team doesn't pull out of the nose-dive they appear to be heading for. When the dust clears, that is the time to discuss it. Until then, although I reserve the right to be critical, I will continue to cheer for this team as much as I possibly can.

Go Huskers!

Good post!

Certainly there's reasons to be critical. I haven't had much time to post recently.....been enjoying a few weeks of "real life" vacation, usually checking in on my phone, which I don't post from.

Unfortunately, I don't know if Doc can win this battle as he's dealing with more injured players than just those that are sitting out. Some that are spending more time in the training room rather than practice just so we can get them on the floor. We need a serious dose of good health to show improvement rather than frustration on the floor.

As far as being upset by his comment, I do think perhaps you're taking it too literally rather than what he means....the message directed towards his team.

As the shooting percentage was dropping during the second half, as we refused to work to get the ball inside which should result in an increase in FT opportunities(especially with their top big man in foul trouble) we were taking the easy way out and jacking up shots. Sometimes the shot came late, but we weren't running the offense.

A coach will put his comment in it's simplest terms rather than elaborate, but the players get the message.

I have to run now. We're headed to the game. Michigan St. is awfully good. I'm having a hard time getting to optimistic for today's game unless we have had a half dozen players wake up today feeling physically better than they have all year.

Losing is tough. Even on the most faithful as well as our players. Even those healthy to see all that's going on around them.

Catch you later and Go Big Red!

unmitigated facts are all these players are Doc's and not many would be starting on any other Big 10 team. I said not many.

How many fans can you name that have openly said they are rooting against this team? Also, I am fairly certain everyone wants NU to win, period! To make those statements are disingenuous as best.

Ive been a Doc supporter and appreciate what he was able to do following Collier...was rooting for Doc to have a good year and see what happened with a new arena and practice facility. But after seeing the results this year, I am also getting off the bandwagon.

We looked great in the Rhode Island game then lost to Oregon, Wake, and then the conference debacles...recruiting is such a big part of basketball and I think itis time for a new direction!

... the problem is, Doc isn't really much (if any) of an improvement from Collier. And you could argue that Barry had to do more rebuilding of the program than Doc did. I pretty much lump the Collier-Sadler era into one.

And Rhode Island has 1 or 2 wins all year.
