Terry McCaulay: "The fix is in."

This isn't so much about the reversed targeting call in last night's ASU-Texas game, but about the integrity of the contest. There is probably no other former official that is respected more than Terry McAulay. He is the grand-poobah. McAulay, a career NFL official, went on social media to explain that the penalty was textbook targeting by the letter of the rule and that play was the exact reason the rule was put into place. He basically said the only reason it wasn't called is because the NCAA was protecting a big brand and essentially "fixing" the game. Wow.

Coming from Terry McCaulay, this is huge.

Yes it was targeting, but it doesn't matter. ASU had a 7-point lead and had them 4th-and-13 in OT and gave up a TD. That's the play that lost them the game.

Yes, they had a chance to overcome a complete homer call. But they shouldn't have to do that. No team should have to defeat both the opposing team and the officiating crew. This wasn't a bang-bang "oops we missed it" call. It was reviewed over and over again, and the officials deliberately discarded the rules for that foul. That's game-fixing.

Yes, you can still win a hand of blackjack if the dealer knows your cards, but the playing field isn't level. He has a decided advantage. We saw this very scenario in the GA Tech/GA game. GA got the benefit of two very gratuitous calls to get them to overtime against GA Tech. GA Tech could have won, but in the end, they had to play against GA and the officiating crew.

OK, so let's say the call went their way. The game was tied at that point. They still would've had to score in regulation - which they possibly could have done, but certainly not definite. But it wasn't like that call cost them the game. They still had a chance to win. All they had to do was make one play on 4th-and-13 and they couldn't get it done. Skattebo did everything he possibly could to help his team win but the ASU defense in OT was horrid.

They would have been 1st and 10 at the Texas 35-yard line with over a minute left. Would they have scored? We will never know. The officials took over and handed the ball back to Texas. The crew wasn't going to take that chance.

The no-call didn't cost them the game, but it likely cost them a very good chance to win the game. The officials - the very ones we rely on to enforce the rules, broke the rules. It should be unacceptable to everyone, including Texas fans, for the respect of the game.

OSU or Texass? In detest both schools but texass is more detested. I can only hope that OSU is peaking and does to texass what they did to the ducks. Accurate passer and elite receivers.

It isn't a matter of it costing them the game, it is a matter of costing them a chance and keeping the 4 and 13 play from ever happening.

You must be a Texas fan.

Not just texas, but also the SEC

I was floored when they did not call that hit targeting. That was targeting if I ever saw it. That no call changed the game. Worse no call I saw all season. The refs from the OSU-Tennessee game were suspended. The crew that reviewed the targeting call should be as well.
