Sweet 16. Huskers vs Ducks

Hames has been a leader, but it didn’t seem so this year. Scary for her to coach next year.

The drop off in serving is incomprehensible to me. Hames, Madi, and Kenzie had been great servers until this year, and suddenly dropped off.

Biggest issue was an absence in setting. We were outset pretty much every game this year.
Hopefully help is on the way.

Reilly is enrolling in the spring so I expect her to get a long, hard look from coach Cook. If it looks like she isn't ready, I would bet Cook goes to the portal to pull in an experienced setter. Kennedi Orr and Anni Evans just aren't what we need to get us to the next level and make it to the final four next year.

There are a lot more knowledgeable volleyball fans in here than I am, but is this the most disappointing season under Cook, comparative to how high preseason expectations were? To go from preseason #1 to eliminated in the Sweet 16 and no conference title. Maybe the 2007 season because of how hyped that team was, but that team at least won the Big 12.

Well, we can't expect to catch lightning in a bottle every year. However, there seemed to be something missing this year. As Ackos said, chemistry and leadership were lacking. Is it because this was just destined to be a year for some of the youngsters to find it? I honestly wonder if the shortfall lies at the foot of the coaching. Too much talent. Too many who needed to play. A different breed of kids today. High expectations from talented players who haven't developed the emotional fortitude to gut it out. How many leave the program will be telling. Also, the women's college volleyball landscape is fast changing like everything else in the world today. The challenges are great. Somewhat like the end of the Osborne era in football.
Apparently, we did a bad job of setting up at the net! Too many assists were too low or too far back to get any good results. All that did was set up the opposition to set up their returns with vigor! :(

Again, the setting was horrible most of the time.

Someone here said the team was way overrated after the Wiscy sweep. Something does seem off. Oh well, cheap Final Four seats in Omaha now.

I don't think we were over-rated and I don't think Oregon took us out of our game. In the end we were not mentally tough enough at the end of close sets to win those oh so critical points. Is that Cook's fault? To some extent, yes, but players in the moment have to seize the moment, be the assassin, and far too many times they did not, and that was the difference. I am gonna look at how many two point sets we won versus lost this year. Lastly, Cook is a smart coach and I think this year will be the one he learns from the most. I am proud of the girls and the coaches. Losing sucks but man this is a top tier program and they showed it again this year. Keep the faith folks and Go Big Red.

Here we are, not where we wanted to be but it is what it is.

Hey we got Kaitlin Hord! 4 time all american! I thought she would be the one to push us over the top. Unfortunately 20 some odd matches later and our setters still cannot set her properly. :Banghead:

Setters: Haimes seemed off all year (maybe just wore out). Orr (injuries) is still a big ?????. Evans is a good player (and local favorite), but not ready for the big time. Cook messed up staying with the 6-2, when he didnt have the setters to run it.

Chemistry and leadership, could see it was missing from day 1. Losing Knuckles seems to have made it worse. Great defense, but serving and passing need lots of work.

I think NU is still as talented as anyone in the country, but need something to make them a great team.

Portal: big time Setter ( Would NU have 4 setters on the team?) Will Orr be ready? Will the incoming Fr be ready?
defensive specialist.
Any other big time studette bring em on.

We have 5 freshmen coming in and only lose 4 to graduation. We’re going to need to cut somebody as is. If we get more transfers, more have to go.

I agree we need a transfer setter and a DS. That would mean three off our existing team have to go. No way we have 4 setters next year. The two most likely to go have to be Orr and Evans.

I am not as ready as folks here to criticize the coaching and leadership of this team. I do think the assistant that left to be HC at LBState was missed, But every great team is capable of losing at Sweet 16. Four match points that could have ended things in NU favor.

Cook said tonight this is the grittiest group he has ever coached — noting they had to deal with lots of adversity. The sophomores refused to talk of next year, saying they felt bad for letting the seniors down, who they loved. If Kenzi, Nicklin and Lauenstein had been healthy the last weekend, we may well have been conference champions and still playing now.

So, disappointing, hell yes. Frustrated— sure. But I really really liked this team and the exciting season they brought us. Thank you Huskers.

This...... We have a ton of B+++ hitters but we miss that assassin, that player that takes over in crunch time. Foecke was an absolute joy to watch, when we needed it, she was there. The past couple of years that player was a middle, Stivirns, Allick, Hord, Caffey but we weren't able to utilize those talents to the fullest and granted are the hardest to set. We need a setter and an assassin with that "eye of the tiger". I'm sure they're coming; Cook is a genius in finding the right answers.

We need a setter. The 6-2 is tricky and I think Cook would rather run a 5-1, but gotta have the right setter. I think Lindsey and Ally and Whitney can be that go to hitter, but not yet. I am hoping for more from all three in 2023. I also think Ally really improved this year and showed she is capable of being a six-rotation player. Still bummed we are not in the mix today but hey the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat thing, right?

The final four I want to see:

Ohio State
Wisconsin
San Diego
Louisville

Ohio Sate over San Diego and Louisville over Wisconsin

Louisville over Ohio State
