You cannot tell me that the two options we had on Saturday night are the only viable options for our stellar punting team. I am intrigued by Brendan Franke, our kickoff specialist. That dude has a leg. Why not at least see if he can punt? What do we really have to lose?

Thoughts??

Find a punter. I can kick a football 7 yards from my recliner. In a university with the size of student body at NU, someone can surly kick a football? Local high school kids can punt at least 40 yards.

YES YES YES!! My feelings exactly...........

HUGE tradition of local/walkon great punters (Koch, Kosch, Foltz...) at DONU - gotta bring in a few next cycle.

As for the immediate need perhaps a soccer player or some athlete buried on the depth chart at another position ??

For all the grief special teams gets, Franke has been good on kickoffs. Also our all B1G placekicker looks to be shaking off the rust (fingers crossed)

I hope you are right ... not sure it is rust or the yips or a confidence issue

One of my coworkers was telling me this morning that in HS his coach was selling him to college recruiters by saying he had an 8-9 second hang time. Problem was he was punting the ball straight up so his distance was somewhat lacking. Even he said that it is darn near impossible to only kick the ball seven yards unless you nearly miss it!

This is where I think our recruiting has failed.

They brought in Kellen Meyer a preferred walk-on PK from Ord the last recruiting cycle.
They brought in Tyler Crawford a preferred walk-on PK/P from Broken Arrow OK in 2020.
They brought in Grant Detlefsen a preferred walk-on P from Lincoln SE and Dylan Jorgensen a PK from Lincoln SW in 2019.

Meyer and Detlefsen are still on the roster. Detlefsen is the only listed Punter other than Cerni and Przystup.

Franke has NEVER punted in a competitive football game ... didn't play football in high school and handled place kicking duties while he was at Morningside. Not sure he's a viable option at punter.
if he was a goalkeeper... I am betting dollars to donuts that he can punt the ball 50 yards in the correct direction (I would take consistent 38 yard punts with no return right now). Now the timing and willingness to handle the stress of it all is another story.

Get every student out of their dorm this morning, line 'em up, and make 'em kick. Find the top 10 and drag their asses over to the stadium and find the most consistent one.

If they refuse tell them the last 3 classes they need to graduate will always be scheduled at 7:30 am.

FWIW, the punt was obviously supposed to be to the right (right hash, pin them down, away from Reed), but that doesn't explain why the entire punt team was drawn to the right side despite MSU having 2 KRs on the field. We have Lincoln native and former Husker LB/ST coach Ross Els to thank for that:

Fear not though fellow Husker fans. Frost explicitly told the media that the punter cost us the game. Els' trickery had no bearing. The coaches were ready for it and Cerni just messed up. What more can Frost do to put these guys in position to succeed when Els and other coaches deploy such tactics? It's like Iowa clapping. It's not fair.

I'm sure that knowing the head coach believes he cost us the game will make him punt better next time. No fear of failure!!

Does anyone remember very early on, like just after his hire, Frost made a remark like: "I leave the kickers alone. They are (something like) a breed of their own.". And everyone at the presser laughed.

So anyways, is it common for teams to not have a ST coach or do most teams have one?
