***'s random thizoughts

Good morning Husker Fans!!!!!!

As you can probably tell by the above, woke up feeling not hungover due to still having alcohol in the system and i've never been more sure of myself than right now. With that said, @Middle-aged_Ball_Coach and @One Hit Wonder have done a great job outlining the game. I'll just add some of the things i'm looking for and i'm sure there will be some redundancy. However, I don't really care as i've chose to just keep the train rolling rather than get a hangover and am on #1 for the day currently.

I am as shocked as most anyone that we are over a touchdown underdog to Minnesota. If i'm not mistaken, preseason you could have taken Minnesota as an underdog in Las Vegas, now it's sitting at +7.5 for Nebraska. For you gamblers out there, wait until they announce Martinez isn't playing and take it around 8 or 9. I'm not sure if we can win this game, we are beat up and on the road against an undefeated team with all the momentum. They just beat Illinois 40-17 where we struggled against the Fighiting Illini, but i'm not sure everything is linear like that. I'll go into what i'm looking for:

A little off topic, but does anyone watch those Kansas City games and see that guy that has a jersey for every NFL team with arrows going thru it? Wonder what company he is a CEO for? Anyway, the defense is going to keep us in this game. Won't be as cold or wet as they were saying, but the biggest predictor of point totals is actually wind and there is supposed to be 15-20 mph of it. I don't really have a ton for this side of the ball which is unusual for me. But we go against this style of offense every day in practice. Their QB is not as good as Martinez, Vedral, or McCaffrey, and we are the best defense they've played to date. Their offense also affords us the ability to get Domann and Tannor out there more frequently.

Also, one of the things we are missing with the graduation of Dedrick Young, is that opposing offenses are picking on guys like Will Honas and Mo Barry in space. Watch for that with Minnesota, as we have a nice counter that we can use with a walk-on to help with athleticism. Also don't be shocked to see someone like Noa Pola-Gates or Quinton Newsome out there as one of their 4 games to help with this spread offense. I like what we are doing for this game. It's all a matter of how well we play in space and our DL being able to get pressure with 3 or an extra LB. Quite honestly, I almost think the first to 21 wins this game. But watch it be a 40-38 game and me be wrong.

So our real issue is going to be offense. So many issues going on for us right now. Let's roll thru them....

Center - This is priority #1. I am not getting paid 5 million dollars, but I do think there is a better option right now for the center spot. Being able to speak to someone pretty close to the situation, I can tell you it is the biggest issue for Adrian Martinez right now. With that said, we are going to get to see if it's a Martinez issue, or if Vedral can work around it and still manage an efficient offense. I think Frost is right that Jurgens can be an unreal center, it's just not right now. And if we start losing games because it's disrupting our offense, that's not good. All that said, let's hope we have that remedied today, they even used outside help to get the snaps better this week.

How will Minnesota defend us? - I saw them line up in a 4-2-5 against Illinois, and Illinois runs a lot of what we do. But I also saw them put an extremely athletic #9 at NG and run somewhat of a 3-4 or 3-3-5. Will they see that Jurgens struggles with the snaps and go that route? Will they stick with a 4 man line? Keep an eye there to see if #9 is in the game, and what the snaps look like there. With that said, I watched Minnesota have success just having 6 guys in the box while Illinois had 5 OL and a TE, and Illinois still couldn't really run on them. If they give us the numbers game like that today, it will be easy for Noah Vedral and it will all be on our OL and RBs to get this W.

Clamoring for TEs.... may get your wish - We can't have a WR step up,and it may be a slugfest smashmouth game, why not go to some proven commodities like Austin Allen and Jack Stoll with a sprinkle of Kurt Rafdal? Get 2 TEs on the field and make Minnesota get in a 4-3 every once in awhile to see who the tougher team is. Matt Vrzal stated on the radio that Minnesota is built from the outside in, meaning good skill players and average linemen. We have the better line on both sides of the ball. Go prove it and win this game downhill.

Under center again? @bilsker brought up a great point about if we would go back to the iFormation like we did against Ohio State. This game would make a ton of sense from what we are predicting it's going to be. The question I have is if Vedral has been practicing it, as it isn't a staple but more of a wrinkle for our offense. Tonight is the perfect time to go back to the well there.

Mo Washington - Offensively and while Minnesota's defense is there, he's the second best player on the field (Minnesota has a stud OLB). We need him to get over pouting that we suspended him for being late when everyone else showed the ability to be there on time and take control of this game. Since he was hurt we had to put Robinson at the top of the iFormation against Ohio State. Would be really cool to see what Washington can do in it.

That's all I have right now as i'm going to go get a free breakfast. 27-24 good guys. If we can't win this game, we are in trouble.

Thizoughts...love it

Questions for ***:

I was thinking earlier about how great it would have been to have Burrows, but then realized he would have been totally wasted with our team.
It's really getting old, saying we are two to three years away. We've been saying it since Callahan arrived. And now we go into a game as an underdog to Minnesota. MINNESOTA!
My question, or questions: Are we truly improving our talent level in the freshman ranks, and would our current group of players have succeeded better under a different offensive system?

I was going to post something related to yours. As I find myself a bit depressed with where we are with this football team. As former lineman in college to have a second year program operating at their level of play is just alarming. I don't care if our lineman get beat but at least use good technique, block someone and gods sake snap the ball to the qb. And honestly, I don't buy they are young nonsense. If we put the same five out their next season they will be average at best.

My second reason for being a bit down is doesn't matter whether martinez or vedral start. Adrian has regressed in his 2nd. there is no evidence that this is not the case. How is that possible? what ever happened to him being a good blinker? Now he is indecisive, doesn't run and is still a turnover machine.

If we could ever get the line to be average and not pathetic and adrian to play like he did last half of last season this team could have won 9-10 now we will be lucky to get to six

Which brings me to Coach Frost, I am confident he will grow but clearly he has made some big mistakes this starting with Colorado OT and his insistence on playing Jurgens. I hope he is open at season's end to evaluating his assistant coaches by asking a simple question, is their unit better today than a year ago.

so I wrote this before I had a drink, and I will cheer for the huskers under the cold reality we are 8 point dog to MINNESOTA

The question is a little moot in my opinion because the same guys aren't starting this year that started last year. The OL is not as good this year for the simple fact that we don't have the same starters as we did last year, now do we? Also, we lost StanleyMorgan and Ozigbo, both of whom were the two best players on our offense last year. This isn't an "apples to apples" comparison, is it? Each year in college football is a different story with kids graduating. This is a very young team with young depth too.

I was supposed to have drinks with *** at the '08 VaTech game. He totally stood me and claimed he was "over served" at another bar, 11 years later and I still haven't recovered emotionally.
I would deny this but i've never seen something that describes me more. Blame the bartender for something that was absolutely my fault. I also remember about fighting an entire frat house after losing on that long bomb to set up the win for Va Tech.

Thanks ***, great as always.

MN loves the quick slant to Bateman, been very productive for them so good DB inside technique and DL hands up will be very important for DONU.

Last year Morgan got us running 4 for 35, so if #22 is playing much OLB, thats likely to happen again, hope to see more Tanner and Domman.

It's snowing in Rochester right now so field is likely going to be slippery making running the ball between the tackles and ball security so important: hope Mills is up for a great game out of the I formation fullback spot.

I also support two tight end but we may see tight ends who are better blockers than Allen get field time to make the run game go.

I looked at our list of receivers; holy crap are they SMALL! Any chance freshman Austin Jablonski (#47) 6'2" 210 could play as a possession receiver right now because DONU's QB really needs a big reliable target in the 8-14 yard range (Stanley Morgan replacement). I had thought much of this role would go to the TE but it hasn't.

GBR
Watching the Illinois game, if their QB would have made quick throws, their WRs were open all day. So watch for that from Vedral, if he's pumping and holding the ball, no good. If he looks decisive and quick on his reads, we should be fine.

I don't see the improvement I thought I would from year 1 to year 2 offensively. And that's Frost's M-O. That said, I think our defense looks much better. Development-wise, I think Fisher is killing it. But guys like Walters and Austin really aren't impressing me right now. However, it's early. But a guy like Matt Farniok should not be struggling like he is. We shouldn't have issues at WR like we do. I will be curious to see what our defense looks like next year. DL theoretically will be worse, so will ILB, and we graduate Davis at OLB who no one can beat out right now.

What makes college football fun (vs. the NFL) is that you've only got a player for 4/5 years – and they're going to develop at a certain rate over that time (on and off season). What this means is that you get the chance to watch guys rise during the course of their collegiate career. And yes, there are quite a few that don't. But you can usually rely on a few "outliers" every year.

That's what makes last year vs. this year's team an interesting case study. Obviously we would love to have some of our graduated seniors back (every team does). But why haven't we seen many guys "rise" this season?

Excluding the newcomers – I can only think of a few guys that seem to be noticably better players in 2019 vs. 2018.

CTB, JoJo... anyone else?

I was expecting more for year 2.

That's a good question. I think Jaimes is. But I can't think of anyone else on offense. I think anyone on our DL is, Stille, Davis twins, etc. Barry seems to have regressed. But I think our DBs are progressing nicely.

I'm hoping there's going to be a massive second half of the season leap like we saw last year. Starts tonight against the gophers.

I recommend A shot of Patron tequila with that breakfast. It won’t be the end of the world losing this game I really believe all of these problems are going to make the coaches better down the road. The Huskers are not championship material win or lose today.
I am looking to see the coaches intervene with solutions to these troubles. That will make this fan happy.

Just shows the work Scott Frost has ahead as the program was left in very bad shape over a course of several years.
Not really relevant to this OP but I'm so tired of hearing this, especially when many on this board were pumping gallons of sunshine about how well the previous regime was recruiting. Good coaches can beat you with his then turn around and beat you with yours (not an original statement) :)

Good coaches recruit good players, or at least try to. Burrow not being recruited is just another reason that shows the previous coaches were not so good.

Nothing to be ashamed of but as a two time honor grad of anger management class I think it's possible some outside help is warranted. Plus the stories from the folks that are there because it's court ordered...hilarious!
