Spring Practice Thread #1 (3/16/18) Post Practice Video With Coach Frost Added

I get that. The thing I'm focused on in this story is the depth statement that was made back on December 20 when this staff looked at the roster and said oh crap...that doesn't look good. If their assessment of the bodies on the roster has indeed changed their tune a little, that's great.
No question. Just taking it with a grain of salt right now.

POB working with Keenan Allen

I think many people discount how good POB is. The guy has a great arm! And being as his Hs offense ran a zone read scheme, he should do fine in SF’s offense. Whoever turns out to be the starting QB will have earned it, and I expect that we may see other QB’s play too.

Having more than one guy on the team capable of doing what is asked is certainly something that has been missing at the QB position. Getting through spring, through fall camp, and into games will reveal the level of play each of these guys are truly capable of displaying on a consistent basis. As you said, whoever gets the nod will have earned it and will have to continue to earn it.

I agree.

POB has a chance . . . I'm not counting anyone out. I do think that Gebbia will be hard to beat on many levels and Martinez is too good of an athlete not to be in the conversation at some point--but will the coaches feel a RS year will be a possible path? Who knows. Depends on where everyone stands in the fall.

POB I think is less athletic than both Gebbia and Martinez and he may have bulked up a bit last year based on the pro-style MR/DL offense that he was competing in before? Might just have been my impression but he looked thicker than his FR year and not quite as spry. Probably because he wasn't expected to run much. If he's gotten his size down a bit and maximized his mobility, then he could definitely be in the chase.

Frost would probably take the guy with less athletic upside if he made quick and correct decisions, was accurate, ran "good enough" and got the ball in the hands of his playmakers with the greatest efficiency. If that's POB then so be it. My gut still tells me Gebbia starts, POB backs up and Martinez redshirts and pushes hard next year . . . but there's a lot of "if's" in there to be seen.

It sounds like we have the possibility of actually having backups that can take over and run the offense as successfully as the starter. Each has their strengths and weakness and our head coach seems capable of exploiting those for the team's benefit.

A good place to be.

You bet. And the "backups" will actually be getting as many reps as the 1's in practices - imagine that!

Agreed! If another QB wins the starting position, the backups better be just as prepared, especially in the first four NC games, as I don’t think SF would hesitate to make a switch to see how another QB does. Of course it depends how well the starter is doing, as if he is doing great, let him go. We all know that injuries can happen in this type of offense, so it’ll be great to have much better depth at QB.

Given the “what have you done lately?” nature of recruiting these days, Austin and the new Husker coaching staff have had to point to what they accomplished in such a short amount of time at UCF as a blueprint of success, in addition to NU’s rich tradition.

“Recruiting is recruiting, and that's the unique thing about recruiting,” Austin said when asked if he finds it easier to recruit to the school he once played for. “I love Nebraska. Sometimes I love Nebraska so much that I’m like, ‘How does this kid not like Nebraska? What the hell is wrong with him?’ You have to understand that these kids, they don’t know all about the tradition and history. They don’t know about that. They don't know about the Nebraska greats. They don’t know that this place used to be a place of just ass kickers, just straight up ass kickers.”

More Austin...
“Yes, that’s what we do, that’s one of our pitches,” Austin said about selling their success at UCF as a blueprint for what’s to come at Nebraska. “We can say what we want to about having five National Championships and “The Pipeline” and Outland and Rimington Trophy award winners. I can say all of that. I can tell them that we had three offensive linemen that made all-conference last year. I can say all of that to them.

“That's not going to tell them, ‘Hey, no doubt; I should be going to Nebraska.’ You've got to produce on the field. Once you produce on the field and once you show that your program is headed in a positive direction and progressive direction, then I think that’s when you get the ultimate buy-in. You'll get kids to start saying, ‘Ok, yep, I'm coming.’”

For the first time in a while, it looks like that depth has the potential to be a good thing at QB.
