Husker Volleyball will participate in the inaugural event at AT&T Stadium

Four premier women’s college volleyball programs will compete on Aug. 27 at AT&T Stadium in a nationally televised exhibition with a $1 million prize purse, the largest ever in women’s college sports.

Nebraska, Penn State, Florida and SMU are set to headline the first-of-its-kind, three-hour primetime event, named Spikes Under the Lights. Two semifinal matches and a championship will be played in a best-of-three-set format at the 100,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys. Standard college matches are contested as best of five. Results will not count toward the teams’ regular-season records.

Interesting it is a one night event with the semi finals being followed by the finals. Probably why they went with 3 sets instead of the normal 5.

Also factoring into the three set play is that it is an "event" and does not count towards season records

If it's three hours long they must feel they can get all three matches done in that amount of time. So first match winner gets an hour breather before they come back for the finals. Second match winner goes without the break. Not sure if there is an advantage or disadvantage.

The 1 million dollars is $200,000 for each school and $200,000 for the winners. The money goes to the players through NIL.

Each school will receive $200,000, with the winner of the event getting an additional $200,000. The money will be distributed to the athletes via NIL.

Sounds like Jerry Jones is the real winner. $$$$$$$

It is clear why Nebraska and SMU are involved. The homeschool, and then the biggest attraction in college volleyball. TCU is also a power conference school within a half an hour of Jerry’s world. Seems like they should have gotten an invite, one school from each P4 conference instead of two Big Ten schools.

That is definitely something different. Nebraska will play Florida and Penn State will play SMU in the opening matches. The winners will play the same night. That means depth will matter. That will be a big advantage for us, especially if we can beat Florida in 2 sets (which I think we can). I wouldn't be surprised if the PSU-SMU match goes to 3 sets.

Even though technically it doesn't matter for our record because these are scrimmages, it does matter that we will get experience playing against some good teams. That will only help us come NCAA tournament time. We could likely see some of these teams again in the tournament.

It's weird and different, but sometimes different is good, and we have a chance to make some good money to help the program. I'm sure all us Nebraska fans will be watching, though I wonder how many will travel to attend this event.

Yeah Jerry will make some money. But if NU would win, 16 girls would get to split $400,000. That would probably have a bigger impact for each of them than the impact Jerry gets for having the match at ATT.
Just the players? Do the coaches/trainers get any of it?

If it is just the players, that will mean potentially $25,000 for each Husker player if they win. Even though these matches don't count for the record, I imagine they will be motivated to win. $25K can buy some serious bling.

I assume just players, I was just going by the quote in the article.

Im assuming the coaches contracts are changed accordingly

I live in the Dallas area and I will be attending along with 2 children (one of whom graduated from UNL in 2008) and 3 granddaughters. I'm excited.

Not sure depth will be a major factor. The way it is set up, there is not a lot more play in the worst case than a hard-fought match going 5 sets
