Special Teams coach

I maybe missed something. Has a new special teams coach been named? If not, can we assume that a new STC be named after the NCG?

No. Not a huge rush, but it's so quiet it could be announced tomorrow and no one would have seen it coming.

Some college S.T. coaches are paid through January 31st. Along with this, NFL level coaches might not be available until after the playoffs. Finally, the NCAA Football Coaches annual meeting just finished in Charlotte, N.C. I have a feeling something will be announced between now and the first week of February.

I would expect HCMR will have this position before they start doing mat drills (or whatever they call them these days) this spring. Timing wise, it would be ideal to have all the coaches in place as this starts.

Given how fast Rhule made other coaching changes (e.g. the DB coach last fall and the replacement for the coach from Texas that got a DUI) - I suspect he has his guy but it's someone still coaching somewhere. It's obviously an important hire - so will be interesting to see what he dials up.

I'm guessing hiring this particular position is not a big deal/hurry. I can't imagine they will be doing much special teams 'stuff' at this point. The 'specialists' themselves will be working on drills but the special teams coach really isn't that big of a deal right now (unless he has some kick/punting/snapping background).

All the Coaches are at the Coaches conference this week before the Championship game, many times coaches use this time to gauge interest and interview guys

I think he may be looking at an NFL guy who is still playing. But anyway, this position isn’t so crucial to fill quickly. Has minimal effect on recruiting or the portal in the short term.

Short term, sure. But we really need some ST help. I'd love to have another Sam Koch or Alex Henery out there. A good ST coach can help bring those guys into the fold.

Remember the days when Henery got an honorary Blackshirt for pinning the opponent back to their own 5 yard line? In terms of field position, that's as good as 3-4 sacks. And he did it probably 2 or 3 times a game.

If we can control the field position game, the Blackshirts don't need to be Suh-level. Even the best offenses will sputter when they're constantly facing 80+ yard drives.

Ok, but does anyone think he won’t have a coach in place for Spring ball? We have our specialists (including a portal deep snapper and portal punter) in place for next season. I fail to see any downside to announcing this in the next month or two. I just want him to hire someone who understands how to coach special teams, some depth of knowledge and the ability to get the players to do it on the field.
