Special Teams…AGAIN!?

Yes snap was low but it wasn’t a 60 yarder either. Buschini did a decent job catching and placing the ball.

Yes, more than Hohl is involved in the process … but make something out of nothing … does it have to be perfect in order for Hohl to be expected to make it?

I suspect they practice less than perfect snaps and hold. You just knew that missing that kick was the start of a bunch of self doubt.
From what I remember . . . the snap was not only low, but it was toward Buschini's right side away from where he'd have to spot the ball. Trying to get control of that horrible a snap and get a successful kick off is pretty hard even for the best special teams. And we may have the worst.

And its a cold slick football on a frozen artificial surface, it all adds up if something doesn't go right

It was a bad snap from the long-snapper. Again. Hard to say it was weather related when it was happening at the start of the season and has been persistent all season.

Understood and watching the play on TV the football seemed tilted significantly.

Nevertheless going into next season with Hohl and/or Hohl and Alvano would concern me. Even with the improvement Hohl showed as the season progressed.

I agree but before we can worry about the kicker we need to find a body who can get the ball back to the holder and give the kicker a chance to be the hero or a zero

We are going to have a new holder/punter anyway … why not clean house.
Hell yeah so long as the next guy is better!! with the 105 limit keeping more than 2 kickers on the team will be hard we might need to find one of those old fashioned guys who did it all PUNT ,KICK OFF , FIELD GOALS most do it in high school so there have to be some out there doesn't there?

And the ball laid on the ground too long. Not sure what the camera angle looked like but from my view in the stands Iowa barely missed blocking it. Kicker has to rush because of all those issues, good chance they’re missing it

Some think at it all falls on the kicker. After the Illinois debacle and spending a few weeks working on it, Hohl was 9-9 up until that miss last night, after a bad snap, bad hold and near block. I’d be all over him if the snap and hold operations were executed properly and he was pulling kicks, kinda like the OSU kicker today. But that hasn’t been the case

I have to believe NU brings in a new ST coach and throws NIL at a proven long snapper and a FG kicker. Maybe Hohl sticks around as a backup? I don't know about Alvano . . . he got a lot of hype for winning the state championship but his injury and kicking issues aren't confidence building. Not sure how many kickers we keep with the roster limits.

I don’t see Rhule dumping Hohl. He’s got a big leg and is only a freshman. All his misses have been due to snap and hold issues. He’s at a 90% make rate since the Illinois game.

There are probably many good potential Special Teams Coaches out there, but I wonder if this one would be any good for us:

Carlos Polk.

After his playing days were over he has been an assistant special teams coach for several NFL teams since 2009, most recently with the Bears this year. Probably will be looking for a new gig since his HC was just fired.

When will this ungodly, relentless ineptitude end? I think Rhule should at least explain to the fans why he is retaining a coach whose unit underperforms to this extent. We cannot possibly expect to have a winning team, let alone a championship contender with STs that play so poorly.
