Special Teams…AGAIN!?

No clue . . . but it's all coaching.

I love Shavers as a player and he'll be great . . . but what the hell is a FR LB doing on special teams in a game like this? You need experienced players and probably ones more used to blocking for returns.
I think that’s the problem. We aren’t planning to execute a “return”.

I don't blame Shavers at all. The returner acted like he touched it so the entire team was trying to recover it. He did what he should have done, and it is the returner who shoulders the blame for trying to catch the ball on that play. However, the repeated ST failures are 100% on Foley.

I am not sure why ICG was ever returning punts. He supposedly had solid hands and was a good decision maker. He was simply average until the last two games and when needed most he was poor.

Hohl choked when it mattered most. Yeah, poor snap but there was enough time to make the kick. He started out the year very poorly, righted himself and then of course when needed most …
I was at the game, 10 yard line 28 rows up and that kick happened on my side of the 50. BB was slow getting the ball of the turf and Hohl was lucky to even get the ball off at all, Iowa missed blocking that by a hair. The long snapper and holder are every bit as important as the kicker. It’s not a 1 player effort

I don't see how you can even remotely say Hohl choked there. That was an absolutely terrible snap. Was a miracle that Buschini managed to corral it at all and get a tip on the grass. But that snap hosed the whole thing and the ball placement, as a result, wasn't great. The timing was VERY late because of that and very few kickers would be expected to overcome that. Much less one that's had crappy snaps hose up kicks repeatedly.

That's not Harrison Butker or Brandon McManus back there.
Yes snap was low but it wasn’t a 60 yarder either. Buschini did a decent job catching and placing the ball.

Yes, more than Hohl is involved in the process … but make something out of nothing … does it have to be perfect in order for Hohl to be expected to make it?

I suspect they practice less than perfect snaps and hold. You just knew that missing that kick was the start of a bunch of self doubt.

I was just starting to feel good about this group. We all could tell from the first point fielded that it was a problem. We looked tentative and unsure. Just sucks to leave points and field position out there.

Looking at it another way, this is the type of game our experienced players have given us for years. The main value in the bowl game, for me, is the extra practice for development of younger players. I would be ok with benching all the seniors after one quarter and use the rest of bowl game as development for next year.

I just looked at the home page and I still don‘t see an article announcing Foley’s firing. What is HCMR waiting on?
The Pony express Station was out of hay and water so the news has been delayed until station is restocked

A great example is Harrison Butker. He was pretty inconsistent a few years ago and it ended up being an issue between him and the holder. Once they worked that out he became one of the best kickers in the league.

All 3 parts of the place kicking are important and any issues throw off the timing which in turn leads to misses.

If Nebraska can get results like the Chiefs I might even donate to 1890 for the kicking trio if that is all it takes.
