Sorsby. The real truth.

He's reportedly declaring for the NFL Supplemental Draft.

I doubt teams spend anything higher than a 6th or 7th round pick on him. He may make less in the NFL than he was scheduled to make in NIL.

The Big 12 Conference after today’s court filings…

I would think any good counsel he received would tell him - good chance you won’t be eligible after the dust settles. Waiting until after the supplemental draft window would be a mistake. And if you are technically eligible, you’re doomed to have a distracting circus haunt you all season.

And any good counsel for Texas Tech would ask them why they’re willing to go down with the ship for this guy.

TTU’s President really stepped in it weeks ago. He said Sorsby had the university’s “full support.” He said it under the guise of supporting a student with a mental health issue. All he had to do was either stay silent, or make it clear that TTU’s support didn’t extend to permitting him to play football. Obviously, the easiest path would have just been to keep his mouth shut and let Sorsby take all the heat for suing the NCAA. This entire saga is a completely self inflicted wound.

He can make up the difference gambling on the team and being the team bookie for his teammates while sitting on the bench or doing the team laundry. :)

I am absolutely stunned by this, but it’s possible somebody spends a second round bid/pick on Sorsby!

Obviously, Sorsby has a lot more talent than former Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers, but IMO there’s a lot more potential downside in drafting Sorsby with a high pick in the supplemental draft. Dekkers reportedly bet on “at least” one ISU game. A $15 bet on ISU to beat OSU in 2021. Dekkers ended up signing with the Saints as a free agent. He went undrafted after playing for Iowa Western CC. Dekkers, from all I’ve read didn’t have an addiction. Or at least not one as bad as Sorsby’s.

I really hope the in-patient therapy helped Sorsby. But as an addict of anything knows, you’re “in recovery” for life. It’s not just one day you’re an addict, the next day you start therapy, and the day after therapy ends you’re “cured” like you’ve had the flu, pneumonia or a broken bone. You’re going to deal with an “evil” part of your brain trying to tempt you for life. This is in addition to other humans who don’t have your best interest at heart trying to tempt you.

Sorsby reportedly placed at least 2,900 bets, including more than 40 on his own team, while at Indiana. He placed at least another 165 while at Cincinnati. He had/has a serious addiction.

Again, I applaud Sorsby for getting help, and from a personal standpoint I’m rooting for him. But given the apparent extent of his addiction, it’s going to be hard for him to avoid relapsing, especially when NFL coaching staffs have “more important things to worry about.”

One of the things I believe Osborne said about LP and his mental illness was that it was easier to help him in a college setting where the coaches and athletic support staff could make sure LP went to therapy and took any prescribed medication. Once he left Nebraska, LP was on his own. NFL teams weren’t going to help him stay mentally able to play (and out of trouble.) If he got in trouble, they’d just cut him and move on. Which is pretty much what happened. If I’m an NFL GM, I’m not going to spend a 2nd round pick on a player with a known addiction/mental illness and then have to hire a support staff to help him stay out of trouble.

If/when Sorsby has to start at QB, the pressure’s going to be enormous. This is in addition to the “regular” pressure of being an NFL starting QB. The gamblers on social media are going to be merciless on this kid 24/7. IMO, nobody would blame him (on a human/personal level) if he relapsed under this kind of pressure.

I hope things do work out for Sorsby in the future. All ever thought was that breaking the rules has to have consequences. IMO, losing a year of college playing time/development and not being in next year’s regular NFL draft, where he’d likely have been the #1 QB on most teams draft board is consequence enough.

Low risk move for the Steelers.

Bring him in. Rodgers can take him along on one of thise mushroom trips south of the border to cure his gambling. Then he can learn under him for a season while fighting it out with Will Howard

This in particular cracks me up:

“In fact, it was Texas attorney general Ken Paxton's letter last week that, oddly enough, paved the way for the school's filing Monday, according to legal experts who spoke to Yahoo Sports. Paxton's letter threatened legal action against the Big 12 if it were to sanction Texas Tech.

It opened a lane for the Big 12's suit. The league's filing on Monday asked a federal judge to bar Paxton's office from preventing the conference from exercising its right under the bylaws to sanction Tech.”

Talk about backfiring.

I like what you wrote here. A friend once told me that "everyone has an addiction of some sort". Some are rather benign, and some are life changing.

Some addictions can be used for good. For instance, I heard a performer state that they were addicted to being on stage, in front of their fans. It was a good thing, till the performer was way past their prime. It was hard to quit something they enjoyed so much. But it was time.

Sorsby's addiction to gambling and his athletic ability can't mix well together. As an athlete, I don't know if anyone can truly trust him ever again. He may be able to become a professional gambler, and it might work out OK. Maybe he can be successful in the NFL, but as a team owner, coach, or fellow player, I wouldn't trust him.

For his life, it might be best to walk away from both, if possible. Whatever he chooses, I, too, hope it works out good for him. And that he has good people in his life to help him make those decisions.
