Serious question

Serious question I was asked today by a friend who’s an A&M grad.

“Would your opinion on Nebraska losing today be different had they not been blown out last week?”

It definitely made me pause and think. If you would have asked me in the off season if I would be happy being 5-3 and losing to Ohio State by less than a TD and a chance to win it, I would be ecstatic.

I’m not trying to breeze past the fact that last week looked horrible, but so far our 3 losses this year are to teams that are a combined 20-2 (20-3 if Oregon hangs on to beat Illinois).

Perhaps we’re not as bad as we think we are, perhaps we’ve just played some really stinking good opponents.

I don’t think we’re a great football team, but the way they responded today was phenomenal. To me it is more impressive because of the clunker they laid last week.

I think for me what’s hard is knowing what we are. Are we closer to the team we saw last week? Or are we closer to the team we saw this week? Maybe somewhere in the middle?

Personally I think we’re closer to the team we saw today. I say that because of the rest of the games we’ve played looked similar to today. Still deficiences but still in the game at the end.

I tend to agree with your sentiment.
We have played some good football teams.
With the exception of the "crap the bed effort" at Indiana, we are right in the game's.
I hope that Indiana game an anomaly.
Today's response was nothing short of miraculous.

We’re not that bad. We have deficiencies that got exposed and schemed in a big way last week. This week, we corrected some of it.

Had last week been closer I might’ve not felt as good about this week as I do currently.

tOSU is a very talented squad, not sure they’re a very good team. I think Oregon wins a rematch in CCG assuming tOSU beats Indiana.

5-3 is decent although the Illinois game stings a bit.

A Realtor partner of mine who is a tOSU alum texted me today shocked at how well we played. I still think we got bowling, but like you said, through all of this, the Illinois loss is the one that stings the most.

Agreed 100 %. both IU & buckeyes are likely playoff teams.

It was a really good bounce back today. I think last week's defensive performance was more of an anomaly, and I don't expect that to happen often. Unfortunately, I still see some of the same other patterns that have led to frustrations. How much is due to our own deficiencies, and how much is due to playing a pretty darn good opponent?

I guess the big question is, which game was the "fluke"? Are we the team that's a play away from beating the best teams in the country? Or the team that looked like it had no business being on the field with other Power 4 teams?

I'm really interested to see how we come out next week. We need to continue to figure out how to perform at a high level consistently, week to week, play to play. Having a convincing, solid win over UCLA, one in which we play well in all phases of the game, would be helpful to the psyche of players and fans.
