There are a number of reasons behind this, one of which as you point out is the aspect of a winning product.

That said, even the best programs have struggled with putting people in the seats. In the 1980's, there wasn't an expectation of comfort when you were at a game. Metal bleachers would have been the norm with hard seatbacks possibly being the luxury. You also didn't have wide access to televised games where you could watch from home. If you were lucky enough to have a game on TV, the broadcast quality would be nowhere near what we get to enjoy today.

The home viewing experience has gotten significantly better over the last 20-30 years. The game has also been curated for television. It is only recently that schools have started taking seriously the upgrades that are needed to the live viewing experience.
 
Ohio St will absolutely sell out. Their fans are every bit as rabid as ours used to be. We still have great fans, definitely in ways of patience, ingenuity in getting tickets, etc we are top 3. Sorry...not sorry.

We are reaching an inflection point. Our kids have top notch facilities. Mind numbing actually. But wins/losses are not keeping pace with facility level. Sorry, not sorry.

I always loved the pilgrimage to Lincoln. It is time for Nebraska football level up on ROI. The juice has not been with the squeeze. This is coming from a guy who loved to hear the band march down O street and get goosebumps from There Is No Place Like Nebraska.

I want the sellout to continue. To me it is important. But we need to start winning these games against ranked teams. Or else the sellout streak will not be the only thing in jeopardy. Sorry not sorry

Someone needs to start writing some big payroll checks. How is Oklahoma State spending more than we are for a roster? How is it that Utah bitch slapped us in the bowl game, when they aren't even spending what we are? With the gazillion more dollars everyone is getting in the Big 10, not much excuse for that. Gotta pay'em to play.

I'm not sure how well DONU is managing the $$$.

Ohio State fans travel really well.
 
I see this going towards the Stadium seating numbers going down due to better amenities :
individual seats with armrest, drink holder and back rest for at least lower bowl
Student Seats and Band area still benches
these things would be just a start.
I could see seating numbers dropping to 70-75K
But more demand for seats increasing and not just due to less seating but better game day amenities
 
There was a time when going to Huskers games was the pinnacle of fun and interaction imo. Tens of thousands of our fans made it an entire social weekend with friends and families. My parents and their friends used to rent an entire train car to go to some of the games. We had the UP that went right through our town and it was a great way for them to enjoy lots of adult beverages and not have to worry. Of course it was win, win and more winning by the Huskers. Everyone loved the team and how good they were year after year. Start winning 10 games a season and I think fan support would once again be super strong....

I believe it was already announced that they are going to keep the seating at 80,000 but maybe with the current ticket issues they might reevaluate it.
 
sean callahan talked about the sellout streak on their show today. he said the article in question has sketchy details behind it. he also said he reached out to someone in the program and heard that its more like 1-2k for the early games theres no way there are 10k tickets not sold for indiana and OSU.

this statement is very suspect.

"According to this Channel 6 (First Alert 6) report, ticket sales are down with about 10,000 seats unsold for all home games."

based on what Sean said, its likely 10k total across all games. not 10k for each home game.

my perspective is we have seen this clickbait stuff before. ppl trying to make money and justify their job. some radio ppl got rebuked by trae taylors dad earlier this year is a perfect example. starting crap where theres no issue. dont trust many in the media at all.......

yeah its planned to reduce to 80k from the current 90k. they may want to buffer that and remove a few more seats like you suggest.
 
Maybe it needs to end, start the reset of playing good football again. It's literally the last piece of our glory days still clinging on. If Nebraska wanted to stay a championship team, they should have quit trying to find a championship coach at a budget price. Let it end and the reset begin.

Yes. We got Devaney cheap. We got Oz cheap. NU has always been known as ahem a tad frugal. It is time to place the same budget on NIL as has been placed on our facilities. That applies to coaches too. Rhule is hardly underpaid. I pray Aurich is the answer. If he is not...hire a stud DC...

Below is a graphic from the report, showing that, according to their source, tickets sales are indeed down about 10K per game. Stadium capacity is ~82K.

The video is from a legacy Channel 6 News broadcast, not an Internet "influencer." Sean Callahan publishes/owns On3.com, and is more likely in need of actual click counts than Channel 6. (I'm not saying Channel 6 doesn't need to sell beer, but their target audiences are different, thus, so are their methodologies.)

Recently, I've received several package offers from huskers.com:
  • 2 tickets for $50
  • 4 tickets for $100 ("we've reduced our prices")
  • 1 ticket to each of the non-conference games for $100.
  • 4 tickets to the Bowling Green game for $160 that includes a $40 concession voucher.
My brother tells me when he went to order the last package, he wasn't able to select from available seats. That's a Big Red flag in my book--I'm guessing they're probably obstructed view seats. (Enjoy your hot dog and view of a concrete post.)

Those numbers are about 3 weeks old at this point. Would be interesting to see where they stand now.
