Satterfield Merged Threads

It's a good play if you can block on the perimeter. Our WR's couldn't block a co-ed rec flag football team.

Would they block better if the defender was dressed like this ?

We’ve been running it consistently thru 2 staffs. I have been calling it out forever. We did it with AM because he was always hurt. I don’t know what our excuse is this year. Also, DR can’t hit a fade pass. Please stop those too.
That's a pass he needs to be able to hit, though. Needs to learn to take some off the throw in some of those situations. Sometimes you want to put it where only your receiver can get the ball, but if you've got a guy with space an underthrow can still result in a TD.

Throwing these screens made more sense last year with Haarberg because it took away some of the decision making and didn't force you to throw the ball through a bunch of defenders. Raiola has the touch that I want to see him working the ball up the field. We don't have the horses to make screen passes successful (both in blocking and in "make you miss" running after the catch). Doesn't mean we shouldn't run a screen pass here or there, but it shouldn't be a staple.

WR might be our worst coached group on the team followed closely by TE. The perimeter screen can work well if executed correctly.
Is there any play that doesn't work well if executed correctly? I don't think that's the argument. It's about our level of execution and the situations in which we are calling them. Running a screen on 3rd and 14 isn't something that is likely to pick up a first down. I understand we are calling it to try and take advantage of blitzes, but catching the ball 15+ yards from the line to gain makes it very difficult to get the first down.

But that is not a high percentage completion throw—even in the NFL. We cannot afford misses like that when our scoring ability is bleak. We just need to him to find something he does well now to help us win now.

I would replace a lot of screen pass calls with hitch routes. Give Dylan 3 different 5 yard hitches on a spread out field and I trust him to make the right read. I feel like we’re drawing up plays for a QB who can’t throw. He can definitely throw well. Make forward passes. An incompletion is better than a 2 yard loss and a momentum shift to the other team.

Yes, but in certain situations you'll take a lower percentage completion when the reward is a TD. That is part of our offense's problem right now. We are taking short, higher percentage completion throws that do nothing to benefit us. A screen pass or a check down throw are certainly better than a sack, but if the defense is ready for either of those, the result is no gain. At that point, it might as well be an incompletion because the result is the same.

"frustrating as sideways passes may be to fans — reduces the potential for turnovers and gives NU a chance in every game."

Sam McKewon quoted in today's OWH. Not sure what the chance to win is, when you don't move the ball down the field and waste a down. Now, I don't have the highest football IQ and I really enjoy and appreciate the many posters on this board who take the time to explain what happens on various plays. But even I have wondered why the boys continue to run those pass plays. OK, why the coaches make them do that. Why do they want to lose a down? And of course, my apologies to Sam.
