RIP: Bill McCartney

I realize many didn't like him, but I always liked Bill McCartney. At age 54, he stepped away from college coaching to pursue his real passion of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through a ministry he started called Promise Keepers. Not many would step away from the limelight to pursue spiritual things, but he did it, and I admire him greatly for it.

He most certainly knew how to resurrect a down trodden program. Smartest move was to make NU its enemy, its rival … in doing so it also set the standard or the goal they were looking to achieve.

Yes, I watched this on the ESPN 30 for 30 show, "The gospel according to Mac." They didn't have a rival, and he felt they needed one, so he decided it would be Nebraska. It worked.

You softened the term 'enemy' by following it up with 'rival'...

You had it right to begin with, McCartney fashioned us as CU's enemy and, in doing so, fomented a genuine hatred that has since been returned in kind by many Husker fans - myself included

That is his legacy

Number one, I can 100% guarantee you that McCartney was not preaching any "genuine hatred". His schtick was for competitive sports and gamesmanship. Anyone deriving "genuine hatred" over a ball team wearing different laundry has a "genuine" problem of their own.

State lines are imaginary. People are people. Finally, McCartney's Promise Keepers had a tremendous impact within the state of Nebraska, too, and still does to this day.

I grew up in Denver

I was there both before and after McCartney's tenure and I can assure you that genuine hatred of all things red is exactly what the man preached

I agree with you that "people are people"

However, when a person like Bill McCartney comes along; intent upon turning one group of people against another, a certain mob mentality of veritable nastiness is the inevitable result

And I'll refrain from commenting upon Promise Keepers
This isn't the board for that

I met him once while working for a car rental company can you guess what color of car I assigned him? That's right a nice dark red car. FYI we didn't have any bright red cars so I had to find anything red

Nice!

I remember a story that once came out about a woman sent from a temp agency or something to briefly work as a secretary in the CU football offices

She recalled running into Coach McCartney at some point during the day and him telling her that she had to go home and change clothes because she was wearing a red skirt

Naturally, she thought he must be joking
That is, until, she ran into him later that same day and he very angrily demanded that she leave the facility

I heard I believe it was Darrian Hagan " I could be wrong on the exact player" who said that McCartney while recruiting him asked him do you really want to be wearing red around your neighborhood ? I'm guessing the Crips were the Dominate Group on his block

I believe it was Hagan
It's Bienemy, however, seared into my memory as he stood on the sideline flashing his gang symbols

Hagan was actually a damn good option QB
One that we wanted

I appreciate McCartney for giving CU Football something to hate (Nebraska).
At least it gave us a little more competition on Saturday's

I lost all respect for the man after one of his athletes impregnated his daughter, had the baby, then died... and McCartney tried making a martyr out of the man... praise Sal.
It was kept out of the papers that Kristy McCartney had Sal Aunese's child, but when she gave birth to Shannon Clavelle's kid it was duly reported

I forget if it was the Denver Post or the Rocky Mountain News

At any rate, Bill McCartney later admitted to getting a gun, getting into his car, and heading for Denver intending to kill the reporter who broke the story

It was along the way, according to McCartney, when Jesus brought him to his senses

Curious...what, exactly, do you mean by that?

How did McCartney make a martyr out of Sal Aunese?
