Requesting Prayers for my Wife (2026 update - p. 80)

Steph got the surgery yesterday (to remove gall bladder). Doctor had said it usually takes 15-20 minutes for the actual procedure; of course it takes longer for anesthesia to take effect and to wear off.

They said they'd send me update texts about every 30 minutes during the surgery, "so I'd probably only get one." Got the first "the patient is doing well" 11 minutes after "the surgery has begun." Then the second "the patient is doing well" 26 minutes later. Then ... After another 40 minutes, got a call from an unknown number. Figured I should pick it up... It was the surgeon, saying everything went well, but it took longer than normal because the gallbladder was abscessed.

She was so happy to have it out, and to be in recovery. Today it's the normal "day after surgery" stuff. Pain at the incision sites, but the worst pain for her is in her right shoulder. So I made a couple calls this morning to the surgeon's nurse who has been our fighter since this started. She said there's a nerve running from above the liver (where the gas pressure is from the surgery) to the right shoulder. My challenge today is to get Steph to go against her instincts and walk around until the gas gets absorbed and the pain is relieved. I know they used to say "you can't leave the hospital until you pass gas." Turns out that's not really a thing (the gas is not in the GI tract but in the body cavity).
Well, it seems she had a successful procedure. Good to hear. More prayers, my friend. :)

I remember, after having minor knee surgery, they wouldn't let me go home until I peed! ;)

The pain hasn't gone away, so we got Steph in late yesterday to get a CT scan. The results seemed normal (post surgery stuff), but this morning the nurse called and said the area is still abscessed, and we need to get her admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics and drainage. We're in the ER now.

Keep us posted, Elwood! We’re rooting for you and Steph.

We sat in the ER waiting area for about 4 hours. Then finally got in to get her drain tube installed. Drained quite a bit of junk off right away. She'll be staying in the hospital at least through tomorrow. I'd love it if she could improve enough to have the drain removed before she comes home, but it may take longer to get everything cleared out.

I got home about an hour ago. Would have stayed overnight, but I have a dog at home who needs me too. The big thing now for Steph is the anxiety she experiences when she's alone in a hospital, thanks to the PTSD she got from the last two places she was in for covid. In her head, she knows that God is in control. Unfortunately, she was in a coma while everyone around her witnessed the miracles He did for her. I'm praying that she gets the comfort and peace that will get her through the night -- whether that's from meds (which the nurses are trying to grow approval for) or from the Spirit.

So, based on the color of the drainage (what started as "abscess" (trying to not be too graphic) is now clearly bile, leaking where it's not supposed to), they're going to have to insert a stent to expand the biliary trunk so the bile drains into the intestine like it's supposed to. Unfortunately they can't do that here, and will have to transport Steph to Atlanta for the procedure. Hoping that happens tomorrow, so they can do the procedure on Monday and get it over with.

At least she is resting, mostly comfortably, now, and is in good spirits. Our routine now is that I'll stay in her room until the sleepy pills kick in, then head for home for a few hours sleep before coming back to the hospital.
