Fighter is right. This was one of those surgeries where she needed to get up and walk ASAP... So I helped her take a lap around the hospital wing the first time. She said she felt like doing 2 laps. Then 3. Then when we got back to the room, the nurse came in and said don't walk so much... because her blood oxygenation had dropped (she overdid it). After that it was just one lap at a time.
Stayed overnight in the hospital after the surgery Monday (me too -- trying to sleep on 2 wooden chairs). Everything looked good yesterday morning so they released her to come home. I had to go in to work today but she managed just fine.

Convalescent spouses are hard on everyone, but in fact, its a blessing to be able to care for someone you love.
My wife died of ALS after three years of slow decline. Last six months we had 24 hour home care, but I continued to want to and did help around the clock.

July 2026 update. Wish I could leave this thread.
My current job has me away from home for weeks at a time. Steph (Mrs. vK) called me at 0430 Monday, concerned with abdominal pains that she'd had since the day before. Her description made me think gall bladder. By that afternoon, we decided she needed to go to the ER. Because the wait times are so long at our local ER, she called for the ambulance to take her. Sure enough, they found gallstones. Gave her some meds and sent her home Monday night.
So I left work and came home on Tuesday (first available). The earliest appointment for a surgery consult was next Tuesday (7/7), with earliest surgery availability of (??). She worked Wednesday (desk job) and took Thursday off. Had a low grade fever the whole time (under 100). She slept all day Thursday, waking up just for short periods. I thought that's great, she needs her rest. When she woke up, she'd be a bit loopy, you know, making some comments like when someone wakes up in lala land. Didn't think much of it. But I did feel like she needed to get up and at least walk around a bit.
Friday morning, she did start to exercise a little. But her comments were still not making sense. As she woke up, she got more and more incoherent, to where I couldn't even communicate with her. Also her fever was spiking. So I called 911 and got the rescue unit to take her to the ER.
She was in septic shock from the infected gallbladder. BP was dangerously low. She was too unstable for surgery (general anesthesia too risky), but they were able to install a drain tube to drain off the infected bile. Filled the bag in about 10 minutes after the procedure. Fortunately they were able to get her BP back into safe range with meds, and it's normal now that she's safe from the sepsis.
Her cognition is much improved, but she's still in a bit of a fog, between the meds and her general condition. I'm hoping that I can get the doctors convinced to take her gallbladder out ASAP without having to send her home first. That would be the best case, and the fastest route to recovery.
Doc (general practitioner) came in a while ago and said that the septic condition didn't do any favors to her kidneys. Kidney function is looking better today, but all these things bring back traumatic thoughts from her past ordeal.

Prayers for everything to work out
Prayers being said. We are going through a fight against sepsis in our family right now and understand how frustrating if can be trying to clear it up. I will be praying that Steph can have the strength to fight it, protect her kidneys, and the doctors are granted the wisdom to clear it quickly.
Elwood. Brother I remember those days we went through a Long haul there and I remember praying specifically for Stephanie Daily. Brother all I can say is Gods still in control, And we will be Praying for Her,For you and for the Drs.
