Report: Petrie Entering the Portal

Reportedly, F Jessica Peatrie is entering the transfer portal.

Sadly, this ends the Australia to Lincoln connection Amy had going on, at least for now. I thought Jessica had some of her best performances as a Husker in the tournament. The flagrant foul the refs inexplicably called on her, when Jess was the one who ended up with the bloody lip, hurt. (In addition, a couple of the inexplicable fouls they called on Hake finished the Huskers off against Baylor. Otherwise, IMO Nebraska wins that game!)

Given that she will be a senior, I get this decision, I’m just sad any time a player moves on. (I’m still sad about Annika Stewart not finishing her career in Lincoln, even though I know she’s still proudly a Husker fan and loved by her former teammates.)

Amy signed 5-star F Ashlyn Koupal and 4-star SF Ava Miles . If everybody came back healthy to start next season, the Huskers would have had Potts, Hargrove, Bozan, Peatrie, Fisher, Koupal and Miles for 2/3 spots on the court. At (allegedly) 5’10, Alanna Neale could play some SF too if necessary. If they’re healthy, Potts and Hargrove definitely start and play a lot. Koupal or Miles are probably the third front court starter unless Bozan has a summer/fall practice breakthrough. Out of that big group of front court players, somebody was unlikely to get a lot of playing time unless there are injuries. Jess only has one more season to get noticed by NBL/NBL1/European scouts. She needs to play for that to happen.

I hope she finds a great program where she can play, develop, and continue her career after college…if that’s what she wants.

They need a big 6-5 6-6 big girl out of portal!

Might want to lower those expectations.

There are not that many 6'5" or taller players in Division 1 women's basketball. Google AI tells me that there are maybe 15-20, although it did give a caveat that the NCAA does not have a central database of all players. Further, there are only FIVE top high school recruits over 6'5" or taller.

Here are the lists it gave me. So, exclude the seniors, realize some are not going to transfer, and any post player that size is likely to be coveted by most major programs.

How much $ do you want the AD to give Amy to get a kid like that?

I can almost guarantee you, that kid’s list looks like this: UConn, South Carolina & UCLA. There may not even be a fourth team on that list. If there is, it’s USC or Tennessee or Texas. Trying to get a kid like that away from the WBB programs that at least break even, and perhaps are profitable and win, is like trying to get a volleyball player away from DBK and Nebraska. Even in the old days before NIL, Nebraska doesn’t get that kid unless she’s from Nebraska or a neighboring state (and likely one that’s not named Iowa.)

The one big kid I was hoping Amy would get, who I thought Nebraska might have a realistic shot at, I don’t think even put the Huskers on her portal visit list, 6-4 C/F Reagan Beers. She went to Oklahoma the year after she destroyed the Huskers for Oregon State.

IMO Amy’s recruiting/roster construction strategy is a bit of a double edged sword. She’s talked about being intentional about kids in the portal. She wants players who fit into the culture she and players like Jaz, Issie, Sam, Alexis and Callin have established. IMO, Scoggins didn’t fit, and that’s apart from the mess with the assistant coach. The way that team meeting reportedly went, Scoggins doesn’t appear to have been well liked at all. Amy’s going to be really careful about making the same mistake.

I’ve said this before, I have never seen a college team in any sport as tight as Amy’s program. They’re not kidding about the program being a family. I’ve also jokingly referred to Amy’s program as a gang, because they sometimes hang out together even when they’re away from Lincoln in the summer and do things like show up to Kennadi’s softball games together. I think this family culture can help when it’s February, 20 degrees outside and everything hurts when you get out of bed in the morning. So it can contribute to winning.

IMO, the focus on culture and fit means the Huskers are probably not going to get the “breakout star” who hits the portal in search of a bigger/better program where she’s going to get more exposure and more $. Even if she has the $ in her NIL budget, IMO Amy’s only going to bring in a portal kid if they fit the existing culture and don’t upset the dynamics. I think one of the reasons Nebraska apparently didn’t push too hard (or maybe at all) to get Beers is because the staff didn’t want cause either Markowski or Potts to leave because they brought in a portal kid everybody knows would start and play a lot. You don’t want to bring in a portal kid now who might negatively impact Potts, Hargrove, Koupal and Miles.

Lastly, Amy’s offense really doesn’t work with a kid like Beers, who shot 17.6% from three, or a kid like Sparty’s 2026 recruit 6’6 Lilly Williams, who doesn’t have a well developed outside game (yet.) The Husker offense is more “positionless.” Which is the way most college and pro teams have been heading the past few years. That’s why a 5’10 kid like Alanna Neale is listed as a G. In the old days, most coaches don’t even think about playing a kid like that at SG/wing IMO. Earlier this season Sarah Fisher talked about working on her three point shooting all summer. In the old days, unless she was incredibly wide open, if a kid like Fisher (or Markowski or Potts) put up a 3-pointer she’s hitting the bench the next dead ball. Now, if a front court player can’t hit at least an occasional three pointer (at least 20-25% from outside), they’re not going to play much.

Following up on BGR’s post, some of those big kids don’t play much or wouldn’t fit at Nebraska.

1. Okechukwu was a mid-season signing for TTU and hasn’t played.
2. Boutilier transferred to Eastern Illinois because she wasn’t playing much the last two years at Texas.
3.Dominguez never played more than 11 minutes for Middle Tennessee this year.
4. Clara Silva played in every game for UK as a freshman, and about 20 MPG for TTU. She doesn’t really fit Amy’s offense because she doesn’t have a well developed outside shot.
5. Boldyreva I think graduated last year and is playing pro ball in Israel.
6. Not getting Okot away from SC.
7. Trygger is one I’d love to poach from NC State.
8. DeBerry graduated from UMD after last season.
9. Koval doesn’t fit because she doesn’t have an outside game.
10. Tac’s been injured. Who knows what her future is.
11. Strack followed her coach to UK. I’d love to poach her, but she’s probably not leaving UK.
12. Thomas: No outside game.
13. Ware: No outside game.
14. Natabou transferred from Iowa State to Florida International. She only scored 4.2 PPG in the Big 12. Probably wouldn’t have done any better in the Big Ten

The men get 6.75 million. So I guessing that the women only get 1 to 2 mil maybe.

Sorry I’m just replying to this now….the flu is evil this year! We (Husker Nation) gotta find a way to help improve that somehow over the next 2-3 years.

As the WBB NCAA Tournament has illustrated, the Big Ten is Murderers Row already and it’s probably not going to get easier over the next few years.

Michigan’s had two 20+ win seasons in a row, Sparty’s gotten a lot better, and Minnesota just had their best conference record in eons. IMO they haven’t been this good since Lindsay Whalen played for them eons ago. UCLA is still gonna be UCLA even without Betts, and USC gets JuJu back for at least one more year. Also, being in LA, both those schools can hook their players up with NIL and other opportunities in broadcasting/advertising, etc. that are unavailable to most other Big Ten schools. To a lesser extent, same thing with UMD and the DMV area (District, Maryland and Virginia.) Unfortunately, just like in every other sport, Nebraska’s at a population disadvantage in producing home grown 4-5 star talent like Britt Prince. So both Amy and Fred are going to need $.

Dannen Has said that donors and boosters are helping the men out now that they have made a run. But he didn't mention anything about the women.

IMO, that’s not surprising, and that’s not a dig at the boosters/donors at all. The magical season comes first, the $ support happens second. I have little doubt Cignetti has very little difficulty convincing Indiana boosters/donors that their favorite school “also” plays football now. Heck, Indiana’s men’s bball program may already be the “other” program in that department now. Plus, even at traditional men’s bball programs like Kentucky, shockingly, football still brings in more $ even if the fball program’s not as good.
