Report: Guatemala-USA World Cup qualifier only available on pay-per view

Because Guatemala owns the rights at home they can do what ever they want....it has happened before against Honduras...for the 2010 World Cup Qualifying....I'm sure they tried to 'hold-up' the US Networks and lets be honest a match with Guatemala is not that attractive....I won't pay to see it....

According to the New York Times, the match will be only accessible on television in the United States on pay-per view only for $29.95 after Guatemala, the host country that contains the television rights for the June 12 match at Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City, was unable to come to a deal with any U.S. television outlets and instead sold the broadcast rights elsewhere instead. Those rights are being distributed domestically by Integrated Sports Media and Traffic Sports USA, with PPV being the route taken, according to the NYT report.

Future television rights for road matches during the qualifying campaign against Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda have not yet been allocated, and there is no guarantee that those games will be easily accessible on network television either.

Does anyone know if TV rights are set up in a similar fashion for UEFA? This seems like a bad business model for CONCACAF, especially now that soccer is picking up steam in the US.

Samething in UEFA....England has had similar issues over the years....FIFA allows it and it sucks....once Blatter leaves I think you are going to see a big overhaul on issues like this....

of equal frustration to me (with a young, soccer playing daughter) is that the US Women's team is frequently not shown on any media outlet at all.

Short sided thinking. They could have given ABC cheap rights to the game while bartered to receive 10+ minutes of advertising for the growing tourism market there. Same thing with Honduras, only Honduras has Roaton to advertise and lost out that much more. The ability to simply advertise tourism to the US market would (I'd think) be 100 times more valuable than the PPV dollar. There's a reason these countries continue to struggle economically, while at the same time essentially exist in paradise. Why is Costa Rica a wealthy country with low crime and Honduras the exact opposite? Costa Rica caters to tourism and prospers from it. Plain and simple.

Lot of corruption down there....a few people in the right positions sell the rights and keep the money...easier to do that then negoitate with US Networks and not get any of the $$....they make a quick score and keep the $$$....they could care less about anything else that happens....they line their pockets and move on....CONCACAF like FIFA have issues of corruption and not just Guatamala....its a way of life....

Watch the games from their stadium's...they thrown stuff at our players (pee bags, projectiles etc) and the officating is as corrupt as it gets.......there is a reason Mexico rarely loses at home in Azteca Stadium and it has to do with more than the altitude....refs are afraid that go their to officiate a match.....110,000 crazy fans who are very violent....look at the USA-Mexico match from the 2009 WC qualifying cycle....that was held at Azteca Stadium.....the ref who handled that match was in their pocket and American fans had to have a police escort to leave the stadium....
