RB position

You can not tell me we could not out bid the Ditch Chickens for this guy:

Key Details on L.J. Phillips Jr.:
  • Production: In 2025, he had 294 carries for 1,921 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 28 receptions for 195 yards.
  • Impact: He is expected to challenge for the starting RB1 spot immediately, bringing elite elusiveness and big-play ability to the Iowa backfield.
  • Background: As a second-team FCS All-American, he provides experienced depth to a room that includes Kamari Moulton, Xavier Williams, and Nathan McNeil.
  • Style: Described as a thick, stocky back with good vision who can run between the tackles and contribute in the passing game.

And you can not further tell me that he would not have been a very good addition to our RB room.......

It depends on what his price tag was and if thats worth the cost. NU kept most of the contributors they wanted to stay, which means they've probably opened up the checkbook. Report were Dante Dowdell was asking between 1-2 million. Ridiculous but there weren't a lot of quality backs in the portal.

I never realized Lawrence Phillips had a son...

Is this a joke? It literally says it in the article that was posted that started this thread. Sorry if I’misreading your sarcasm.

“We got our answer when the transfer portal opened and closed without any public indication the Huskers offered a single running back. General manager Pat Stewart gauged the market and determined it was best to use resources on other positions.”

I dont believe that for a second.

Who was in the portal?
What was their price?
Could we afford it?
Were they better than what we currently have?
Well I guess I’m deferring to news sources that cover Husker football, including the article in this thread. But I don’t have any inside knowledge… so maybe you’re right?

Do you know the answers to your questions?

Thats the voice i choose to trust in this equation. Perhaps the guy that wrote the OP knows more, i dunno

It's hard to argue with the basic premise of the article--that of the position groups RB may be one of the thinnest in terms of experience and we are going more the developmental than NIL route which is more of gamble. Not a prediction but more risky.

Given the price tags of what RBs were going for in the portal, I guess I'd like to know what RB would be worth the cost they were asking for? None of the possible options that were reported seem to be an upgrade over what is currently on the roster.
Sounds a business decision. "We can't afford an upgrade, so we'll stick with what we have and hope for the best." Gotta love college football.

Agreed.
And our QB Colandrea is an "additional" RB.
I'm less worried for 2026 than last year.

Our season is dependent on a few too many assumptions, but such is the life of a Husker fan these days. I am excited to see the spring game and maybe put an assumption or two to bed.
I agree with you regarding assumptions and your assessment of them.
My optimism comes specifically based on having a QB behind center, that has a multitude of weapons.
This QB seems to assess the field in a quick, concise manner.
QB runs we're not anticipated by our opponents last year.
I like the change and options it gives OCDH.

What about a better, improved and well coached offensive line?

What if our offensive line fills some of that talent drop-off at RB?

What if an RPO style offense adds greater diversity in the run game?

What if, God-forbid, that our RB room is better and more adept at filling the perceived drop-off? What if our coaches know better?

No one, including the articles writer, could have predicted EJs accession last season. Maybe our coaches see something others do not?
Amen. We need a great offensive line that can make average RBs look like all americans, not all american RBs that make a bad line look average.

That was the biggest issue. There was an overall lack of RB talent in the portal...and despite many not being much of an upgrade, they were given some big money.

Am I disappointed they didn't land a veteran back. I am. Very much so. But I also understand the dynamics of this year's portal class.

Case in point. Dante Dowdell ended up at Georgia.
