I'm too young to remember Monte as a player, but I remember him as the DC in the "Game of the Century". I was upset when he left Nebraska, but he went on to have a terrific career. Heart felt sympathies to his family and friends. RIP.
Strangely I was just reading about Monte today in Bob Devaney's autobiography. Some fun tidbits about him:
-Monte was recruited heavily by both Bill Jennings at Nebraska and Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma. Apparently there was a gentleman's agreement that OK wouldn't recruit kids out of Nebraska but Bud neglected it. So Bill sent Bud a letter saying he'd report some recruiting violations he knew of during his time on OU's staff if Bud didn't back off. Bud forwarded the letter to the NCAA, or whatever it was called back then. Monte Kiffin effectively got Oklahoma put on probation for a year.
-Monte went out and got wild with his teammates before a bowl game - not sure if it was one of the Orange Bowls or the Gotham Bowl in 63 - and apparently stole a milk truck. He picked up some of his teammates and went joyriding in it. When the cops pulled them over, everyone got away but Monte, who ultimately got a suspended sentence.
-Monte desparately wanted to be like Bob Devaney's other assistants and get a head coaching gig. He never could as a NU assistant so he left to get more experience elsewhere. He was only ever a head coach for NC State in the early 80s. He'd drive the team to the beach on really hot days and once dressed up as the lone ranger on campus.
Sounds like a first class guy. RIP to an absolute legend.
Some glaring errors in the article Monte and Van Zant never worked together Van Zant was DC after Coach left Coach was DC under both Devaney and Osborne. He along with Coach Powers were considered as Possible successor to Devaney but TO was Hired and they both moved on.
