Predicting 8 or less wins

Interesting take by your Purdue grad Co-worker. Nebraska is basically Purdue? Purdue would kill to consistently win 9 games a year. I don't know if Nebraska stays at a 9 win plateau, but I like Nebraska's chances to consistently be at the top of the B1G West. You have to win the west first or you don't have a shot at winning the conference and if you don't win the conference your chances of making the playoffs are pretty low.

It is more difficult for Nebraska to be really good now. He is right about that, but it is not impossible. It just takes the right coach, which I think we have, and getting things going in the right direction.

Brohm is the one that will Plateau. He will never get the top end recruits to really get things turned around. He has went 6-6 2 years in a row, is he going to get to 8-9 wins or is he going to be the guy that wins 7 games a year and knocks off a really good team each year. He is a good coach, but is Purdue really committed to being elite? Nebraska is committed to being elite. I don't know if they get there but they are trying. Right now there are only about 3-4 truely elite teams, and you know who they are.

As far as the original OP is concerned I think they go 8-4 and I think with a good shot at winning a decent bowl game. I would be ecstatic with that outcome. I say 8-4 because it is a reasonable expectation. They will stumble somewhere. I just don't know where. I look at the schedule and can truly say that I don't see a sure loss. They could win more, but I don't think they lose more than 4 games.

Was watching the PSU/Wisconsin B1G Championship game from 2016 yesterday on the 60 minute loop on BTN. PSU had an average defense that could generate a few sacks a game. They had an average offensive line. McSorley was running for his life all the time in that game. But they had a great RB, a great college QB and a couple of pretty good receivers. They also really believed in themselves and really had a will to win.

They were dead in the water at 4-2 earlier in the year. They had a beat down to Michigan that looked similar to Nebraska's last year. They were a couple of lucky breaks from losing to Minnesota and being 3-3. Then they beat OSU and the whole season changes. Not saying that will happen with Nebraska, but it does give me a lot of hope.

I watched ht yesterday too

- RB situation not looking good
- OL meh
- LBs ???
- QB depth questionable
- Secondary also ???
I would say the RB is better actually

OL has experience even if there are a couple holes to fill. The style of play is MUCH more manageable for an O-lineman than in a pro system.

LB’s are solid though depth “could” be an issue if there are injuries.

Secondary is arguably the strongest area of the entire team!

QB depth, it is what it is, we have one of the nations premier kids at that position. Mop up duty for the rest of them. And Vedral does have experience!

Feel better? ;)

I’m generally optimistic and see no reason not to be as a fan in August. The time of year to think about the possibilities and be encouraged that things will break our way this coming season.

Of course after week 2 or definitely after week 5 it's entirely possible we'll see that the team is greatly improved due to strong coaching and we're off to the races, maybe finishing with 10 wins regular season.
I think that there is at least a 50/50 chance that we start the season at 5-0, which means we beat Ohio State. If that happens, my prediction is that that is the moment when Husker fans will lose their ever-lovin' minds and start talking like "We want 'Bama" and "Clemson is overrated," etc., and then we lose a couple of games to decent teams that we thought we'd beat. That would be when Prozac and Zoloft flies off the shelves, and all of the pro-pot folks reignite their love with their herb of choice.

You heard it here first.

Minnesota must have been impressive since so many on here think they have the greatest coach ever.
Hmm, you and I have had a lot of debates about Minnesota and PJ Fleck, yet I don't remember anyone saying that. Could you, please, show a link or a quotation from any Husker fans on this board saying that Fleck is "the greatest coach ever?"

On the other hand, I can share a snapshot of you saying that they'd finish 10th in the conference.

It is called exaggeration for affect. The love affair of you and a few others certainly puts you in that neighborhood.

The defense is vastly improved and Martinez leads an offense that improves as the year progresses. Am looking for 8 wins.

I know its all relevant but if are defense vastly improves and an already potent offense progresses as the year goes along...….who are the 4 teams that can beat us? Most of the games last year were close and this year most of those are at home. If we had a vastly improved defense last year and a more potent offense we probably would have won 9-10 games with a tougher schedule than this one. Now we might only win 8 games this year but it won't because we have a vastly improved defense and offense. Its more likely because it WASN"T vastly improved.

I think like this also....

Consistency is the key.

In order for Nebraska to get to the 8-win plateau it would mean a 4-win improvement over 2018. I decided to look at all 14 Big Ten teams and their season-by-season records since 1980. I looked specifically for an improvement of 4 or more wins from the previous season. Interesting group of head coaches on this list.

Straw-man much? I disagree with you about Fleck and Minnesota, so it's a "love affair." You're not using hyperbole to be amusing; you're using it to cover up that you said some things about Minnesota that are very unlikely to hold up, so you make it about what others have said. I've repeatedly said that I don't even like Fleck, but he's a good football coach who has Minnesota turning around its program. I'm not sure why it bothers you so much to admit that. It seems personal.
