As far as Cig goes, he did what SF was unable to do, brought his guys, his coaches and made it work.
Now comes the harder part, he loses his guys as his foundation is weakened, replacing them en masse as plug n play at those numbers wont happen, and recruiting guys you have to grow them into position as well, throws the whole timing off. Yet still he's one heck of a coach.

I would bet on Cigs being able to do replace coaches at this point until proven otherwise. Of course Cignetti is already 64 so who knows how many more years he plans to coach and/or how many coaches he will even need to replace.

IMO top 10 coach, he just coached in a lower league so to speak. Like we're seeing the poaching all things/coaches Dakota, and they've proven themselves as well.
But Indy did things we, other schools wouldnt do. SF wouldnt take his players, other schools wouldnt take the assistant coaches. Indy gained most by far

I went back and looked at our recruiting rankings since 2018, which is as far back as my source goes (Wikipedia.) Wikipedia also lists top ranked recruits and which school landed them. Here are Nebraska's historical rankings:

The 2026 numbers were as of September 2025.

In 2020, Michigan's rankings were 11 / 10 / 10. Four years later they're National Champs.
In 2021, Ohio State's rankings were 2 / 2 / 2. Four years later, they're National Champs.
Indiana hasn't been in the top 25 during this period.

Cignetti made the portal work for Indiana, but I think it's still a fair question: If we're consistently in top 25 recruiting, why aren't we just as consistently ranked in the top 25 in the polls? Are the recruit ranking systems flawed? The three systems are relatively in sync, so, while possible, that seems unlikely.

We just need to recruit better. How we accomplish that is a mystery to me, but I believe given today's system, it's going to take a boat-load of cash--probably more than we have.

A few of the years we were approaching the top 25 we would lose one or both of our last two games. With that comes no bowl game & no chance to move up. S & C may have played a role in all of this.

I think that plays a part! We dont have advantage there anymore!

I think MR has done a much better job than his predecessor in RETENTION, especially those we want to retain … noteworthy in this era of transfer portal.

I also think the jury is still out on development. Certainly there are some noteworthy successes and failures but, for example, our offensive lines in these last few years have been almost exclusively imports. There’s yet an Rhule/Raiola OL recruit who has been a contributor.

The biggest room in size and numbers of any team and we were just OK. That's going to have a huge effect on wins and losses.

I think part of it is having a coach that can recruit and coach them up.

In our case Callahan could recruit but couldn't coach, Riley could recruit but wasn't necessarily allowed to coach, and Frost could recruit but didn't want to be bothered to take the time to coach.

One thing that was interesting with your numbers. Raiola didn't really boost the numbers that much over the other years.
