Senior-level bouts unfolded on Sunday night in Chicago.

"By almost all accounts Rumble on the Rooftop, a series of matches held on a Chicago rooftop and wrestling's first public event since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in March, was a success with regard to the matches and the sport. But that's not the full story.

The event was also being watched closely as an example of how wrestling could return while keeping athletes, coaches, fans and staff safe from coronavirus transmission. In that regard, even Bryan Medlin, the head coach of the Illinois Regional Training Center and a key player in organizing the wrestling component of the event, admitted there were problems. "

Burroughs, Berger Set to Wrestle Saturday in Austin
Two-time national champion for Nebraska and Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs will meet former Arizona State wrestler Zahid Valencia in the main event of a seven-match card on Saturday, Nov. 14 in Austin, Texas. Wrestling in the undercard is three-time All-American for the Huskers Tyler Berger, who will face Ohio State's Sammy Sasso.

Burroughs and Berger win matches!
160 lbs. – Tyler Berger df. Sammy Sasso, 8-2
185 lbs. – Jordan Burroughs df. Zahid Valencia, 8-5

"The two went head-to-head at a catchweight,185 pounds. Burroughs normally competes at 74 kg/163 pounds, while Valencia competes at 86 kg/189 pounds.

Valencia, a 2017 Junior World silver medalist and two-time NCAA champion for Arizona State, drew first blood in the match against five-time World and Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs, with a duck under for a takedown in the first minute. Shortly after, Valencia extended his lead with another takedown for a 4-0 advantage at the break.

In the second period, Burroughs began his comeback bid with an early go-behind for a takedown. Valencia tacked on a step out but that would be all the Sun Devil would score."

"At 160 pounds, NCAA finalist Tyler Berger, who is one of Burroughs’ primary training partners, showed out against Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso. Berger controlled the bout, picking up four takedowns to Sasso’s one that gave him an 8-2 victory. "

Taylor beats JB, 4-4 on criteria!

TIEBREAKER CRITERIA:
  • Value of holds – The wrestler who scored the highest point value move. For example, if one wrestler hit a five point move and the other wrestler’s highest value move was only three points, then the wrestler with the five point move would win the tiebreaker.
  • Least number of cautions
  • Last point scored.
  • In the event that a match ends zero to zero and both wrestlers have one of the wrestlers would be put on the shot clock during the final minute of each period. Even if a wrestler doesn’t score in the 30 second shot clock, a caution and 1 point would be the result. Therefore, at worst a match could end 1-1. If this occurs, the wrestler who scored the last point from the expiration of the 30 second shot clock would be the winner.

Former NU Football lineman Tanner Farmer makes it to the Olympic trials:

130 kg: Tanner Farmer (NYAC/IRTC, 5PM #10) def. Tommy Helton (Southern Illinois RTC, 5PM #12) 9-1, TF

"No step-outs. No takedowns. Passivity is where it began and ended. Helton got dinged, and Farmer’s improved gutwrench took care of the rest. A 9-0 technical fall was the result. Although still but a neophyte, Farmer is seen as a significant threat to the more established names who will be occupying bracket space one week from now."

Yeah, I saw Jordan lost to Dake...Dake is a very good wrestler, and heck, Jordan is 32yrs old now. I really do not like the Olympic style vs USA Freestyle, but I watch it

The Big 12 Conference announced that Missouri’s wrestling program will be added as an affiliate member beginning with the upcoming 2021-22 athletic year. The Tigers will be one of eight affiliates along with four Big 12 institutions in the 12-team alliance.

Missouri will join Big 12 legacy members Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia along with affiliate programs Air Force, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. Former affiliate Fresno State eliminated wrestling after the 2020-21 season.

“The addition of Missouri wrestling fortifies the Big 12 as one of the sport’s premiere conferences,” commented Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “The MU program has established itself among the finest in collegiate wrestling, boasting 58 All Americans and ten Top 10 NCAA team finishes. The road to a Big 12 championship title has become an even bigger challenge. We welcome Missouri wrestling back to the Big 12 and look forward to hosting Tiger fans at the Conference championship tournament in Tulsa.”

"Six Huskers in total competed at Senior Nationals, with Alex Thomsen (60 kg) wrestling Greco-Roman on Friday and Tyler Berger (70 kg), Landon Brown (125 kg), TJ Dudley (92 kg) and Christian Lance (125 kg) joining Green in the freestyle division.

On his quest for the title, Green defeated his first three opponents by superiority, wrestling less than six minutes combined in his first three matches on the day. He went on to win his semifinal bout against Brayton Lee (Gopher Wrestling Club – RTC) by 4-2 decision and ultimately won the title with a 7-2 win over Alec Pantaleo (TMWC/CKWC).

Green's second career Senior National title earns him a spot at the 2021 U.S. World Team Trials in September. Also earning qualifications to the World Team Trials with top five finishes in their respective weight classes were Berger (third), Dudley (third), Lance (fifth) and Thomsen (third).

At UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals, Dominick Serrano (61 kg) led the contingent of six Huskers competing with a third-place finish. After falling in the semifinals of the championship bracket, he defeated his next two opponents by decision to secure the third-place result on Sunday.

The remaining field of NU grapplers at Junior Nationals included Jeremiah Reno (57 kg), Kevon Davenport (70 kg), Nic Stoltenberg (70 kg), Elise Brown Ton (74 kg) and Nathan Haas (86 kg). "

Robb, Labriola Qualify For U23 World Wrestling Championships

"LINCOLN, Neb. – Two Husker wrestlers secured a spot on Team USA and will compete at the U23 Wrestling World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia after winning their divisions at the 2021 United World Wrestling (UWW) U23 Nationals hosted in Lincoln, Neb.

Sophomore Peyton Robb placed first in 74 kg freestyle and junior Mikey Labriola won the 79 kg freestyle event at the Devaney Sports Center that ran from Thursday to Saturday to qualify for the Championships in November.

"Peyton and Mikey performed greatly," Head Coach Mark Manning said. "They each won against an elite group of wrestlers, and we are excited for these guys to compete internationally."

"Junior Cale Davidson (97 kg) placed fifth, sophomore Ridge Lovett (70 kg) finished sixth, sophomore Alex Thomsen (61 kg) placed seventh. Sophomore Austin Emerson (130 kg) was the lone Husker competing in the heavyweight Greco-Roman event and placed seventh."

At 74 kg, Ivy League rivals Quincy Monday, a 2020 First-Team NWCA All-American for Princeton, and 2020 NCAA qualifier Philip Conigliaro of Harvard will wrestle in tomorrow morning’s semifinals. The other 74 kg semifinal features two-time NCAA qualifier Peyton Robb of Nebraska and Oklahoma State’s Jalin Harper, who knocked off two-time NCAA qualifier and 2019 Junior Pan Am champion Danny Braunagel in the semifinals, 7-4.

In a rematch of the 2020 UWW Junior finals, Michael O’Malley, a two-time NCAA qualifier for Drexel, and Iowa freshman Patrick Kennedy will square off once again. Last time around, O’Malley pinned Kennedy in a first-period headlock. In the bracket’s other half, Nebraska’s two-time All-American Michael Labriola will take on Indiana’s Donnell Washington, who claimed a spot on the 2021 Junior World Team earlier this year.

74 kg
Jalin Harper (Cowboy RTC) vs. Peyton Robb (Nebraska WTC)
Quincy Monday (NJRTC) vs. Philip Conigliaro (New England RTC)

79 kg
Michael O’Malley (Pennsylvania RTC) vs. Patrick Kennedy (Hawkeye WC)
Michael Labriola (Nebraska WTC) vs. Donnell Washington (Indiana RTC)

At 74 kg, Nebraska’s Peyton Robb made his first World Team on home turf, defeating Princeton’s 2020 NWCA First-Team All-American Quincy Monday in back-to-back matches, 12-3 and 7-5.

Following his teammate’s performance at 74 kg, Nebraska’s two-time NCAA All-American Michael Labriola claimed the World Team spot at 79 kg. In the finals, he downed Drexel’s Michael O’Malley, 2-2 and 5-2.

Both secured their spots on Team USA for the U23 Wrestling World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in November.

UPDATE 7 Nov: Labriola didn't compete and Robb was eliminated with 1 win and 1 loss.
