Portal be portin' (Berke)

This is surprising. His outside shooting was coming around and we passes the ball pretty well. Not as good as Mast but he is a valuable piece to this team.

Not someone I was worried about entering the portal.

Do we have any information to suggest added NIL funds as a consequence of Hoiberg’s award winning season and the team success?

I would think a coach with more prominence and more competitive funds would equal a chance for a step up in talent this offseason.

Mast is the hardest guy to replace. His combination of size and shooting with such a crafty play style is not easily found. Sam Hoiberg was fun to root for and developed himself into a legitimate Big Ten point guard. But there is room to add more athletic talent to that position (likely with a step back in basketball smarts/experience).

I can’t fault these guys for transferring to maximize their earnings. Especially when you see Michigans model that just decisively won a national title. But it won’t be right if Buyuntencel (without looking at the spelling) isn’t wearing that big red cowboy hat.

I think Berke can be replaced out of the portal! He was ok but not great! I cringed everytime him or Cale had the ball in their hands when shot clock ticking down!

Conversation:

Fred - We think your NIL valuation is $X
Berke (and his agent) - We think our valuation is $Y
Fred - Not sure we can meet that, why don’t you see if there is something better out there

Agree there is more to the story, and this might be it.

The other piece that is unknown is who Fred & Co might be talking to to come in from the portal, and may be a better use of NIL

Sure most of these conversations have a bit more complexity than what I inferred.

The nice thing about Berke is he knows the culture, he was productive in the Husker schemes and he was capable in the conference.

Assuming Sandfort is coming back, along with Frager and Jacobsen scoring isn’t a high priority. Losing him would severely weaken the front court depth.

Of the team members that needed to be retained BB would be no better than #3 on the list. Then you have to go out and get a starter at PG and C, the two positions that command the highest dollar. That's before you start working on depth pieces.

Only so much money to go around, rumors are a Big XII team is involved and offering above market. I really like Berke as a role player, wish he'd stick around.
