Strengths:

Valentine clearly has the size NFL teams covet on the interior with huge legs and calves. When he is healthy and dialed in, Valentine has shown flashes of dominance and can be disruptive along the interior. Often times discarding opposing guards and centers and quickly penetrating into the backfield. Valentine is able to clog up gaps and eat up double teams. Possesses tremendous strength at the first point of contact and will jolt offensive linemen off the ball. Despite his size he does a good job of chasing down ball carriers. Valentine has quick hands and feet and impressive lateral movement for a man his size. Does a good job of disengaging from double teams and latching onto passing running backs. Plays with good body leverage and can be difficult to block one-on-one. Valentine played in a 4-3 at Nebraska, often playing the 1-technique. He can fill that role in the NFL, but he seems a perfect fit as a 0-technique in a 3-4. His size and ability to command double teams, along with his scheme flexibility should make him an attractive option to a lot of teams.

Weaknesses:

Had issues with effort and motivation during his 4-years at Nebraska. There are also concerns regarding poor practice habits. Those are the kinds of red flags that really scare NFL teams. Poor conditioning has led to fatigue and wearing down during games. He needs to be fresh in order to play at his best and be his most effective. A lack of stamina may cause him to be viewed as only a rotation player. He often times allows blockers to keep him occupied. Valentine often stands upright against taller offensive linemen and loses his leverage. There is no questioning his ability to stop the run, but his pass rushing skills are below average. Could use some work on his hand placement. Lacks the acceleration and game speed that scouts want to see. Has questionable awareness and doesn't recognize plays quickly enough. Consistency has been an issue with Valentine and he appears to take plays off. On some downs he looks like a 2nd or 3rd round pick, but on others he looks like someone who could go undrafted.

Overview:

Valentine was slowed throughout this past season by injuries. Instead of returning to school to prove himself to scouts, he chose to leave early for the NFL - a decision that was highly questionable and frankly a mistake. Valentine has shown real promise at points during his career at Nebraska, but his time in college is also marked by inconsistency and injuries. Despite being surprisingly athletic for a man his size, Valentine isn't explosive off the ball. He is very stout at the point of attack, though, and shows the ability to anchor while potentially operating out of a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive alignment. Valentine will need to continue to transform his body in the NFL and carry more "good" weight and lose the excess baggage around the stomach. Scouts will have questions about his work ethic, but if Valentine puts in the effort he could be a nice late-round pickup. He will need some time to better learn the game and fine-tune his craft. There is always a need in the NFL for guys who can clog the middle and take on double teams, and that is Valentine's forte. He should make a NFL roster as a backup nose tackle initially, with potential to be a starter down the road if he is willing to put in the work. I see Valentine being drafted around the 6th round.
