I think what Cornjob said is right though, they’re not going to overspend and use talent identification to pick their guys. I’d assume if this next season is a failure and they don’t fire Rhule that he would then overspend on some studs. And when I say overspend, it’s by a LOT. If you’re not a winner, you have to really fork out some money
 
There is an onus on the equivalent of “pro scouting” where Nebraska has to identify talent better than other teams. The easiest (and most expensive route is to pay for the consensus best guy in the portal. But Fernando Mendoza wasn’t that expensive transfer target, and he just won the Heisman.

Nebraska needs to target strategically, including identifying players that are on the cusp of breaking out. I think the QB target of Minchey from Notre Dame could be a good example of the right way to do this. We’ll see.

A lot of teams are hiring GMs to do this. Oklahoma State hired a 24 year old statistics genius. Dudes never played a down. That will be interesting.

Bingo. Everyone thinks Tech was just out there buying dudes available in the portal. There was certainly an element of some of that but it's mostly been identifying the right guys that fit their scheme/system.

Theo Epstein would like a word... So would NFL GM's Howie Roseman (Philly), Andrew Berry (Cleveland), Kweisi Adofo-Mensah (Minnesota), Sashi Bown (former GM, now Baltimore's team president) and at least a few others. When Roseman got the Philly job, he was the youngest GM in the league.

Hiring analytics experts has been the trend in sports since Moneyball by Michael Lewis was published in 2003. With the explosion in AI, this trend is likely only going to continue. In fact, I think the next frontier may be coaching staffs with a mix of AI/analytics experts along with guys who played. Given Nebraska's history as a pioneer, I hope the Athletic Department has the foresight to embrace these new tools.

Hope it works out better than the evaluation of Sims. Right now it appears a good gamble though.

There is a lot of infrastructure in place now including a GM. We haven’t heard much about the scouting department, but I suspect it’s getting pretty sophisticated. We also have Dana Holgorsen whose opinion is valuable.

but they still have to pay those guys.. so it is part of it
