Padded helmets: Why isn't every player required to wear one?

Yeah, I bet that's what Ahman and Roger are thinking right about now.

I've been watching a few high school teams around here profiled on the news for this season. Several teams are wearing these huge, padded helmets in practice. Safety comes first in practice. In the game? Cool comes first. That's an interesting commentary, isn't it?

These padded helmets weren’t around when they played so who is to say that they wouldn’t have worn one. They could have been trend setters if it was an option.

Just saying. Tell that to a kid, a kid who knows it all, which is a good majority. You and I know, but get thru to a kid. It’s not cool. Looks win out far too often.

One thing I have read is some players have found it hard to hear because that outer pad can sometimes cover the ear holes. Not sure if that's a factor at all.
