OWH Football Coverage

I really like the football coverage in the Omaha World Herald, especially Mckewon’s work. But I haven’t lived in Nebraska for decades, so I don’t need year round news. But man, once you subscribe, it’s next to impossible to cancel. First I sent an email to cancel but still got charged. So then I had to talk to a rep after waiting for 20 min and then they keep badgering me to stay with them. The rep is like an AI bot that won’t take no for an answer. I felt like I was being chased by the Terminator. I kept repeating that I want to cancel and she just kept rattling off new offers in her pleasant perfunctory manner. So annoying!

Sam, I’m going to miss you. I want to support local journalism and I’m willing to pay for my content. But these people just irritated me so much that I’m not coming back.

They are like a sticky booger, can't flick it off.

Yep. I had to cancel through my bank to stop the payments. They just wouldn't take no for an answer til the point I stopped communicating with them. Their cancel with the email thing does not work. Mckewon's info and articles are awesome but OWH really discouraged me from every subscribing again.

I don’t need to be redundant in my distaste for McKeon. But I’ll say it again he is the worst journalist…. Well not as bad as barf bag barkfeldt (don’t care if I spelled it wrong ) or that other dork dirky boy. So maybe there is promise for him yet. But I’ve been done with him for a long time. There’s waaaaay better journalists you can read

Have not subscribed to the OWH for a while. What you are describing here is 100% of the reason that I only use a single-use CC # generated from my Citi Mastercard account, where I can set a spend limit and expiration date for that card number for this type of spend. These types of things will never see my real CC number, and I would never even consider using a debit card.

Just to verify, what is your real CC number?

A long while ago, I had signed up for directv and while on the phone with a rep, he tried to push the NFL package on me, and I told him I didn't need or want it. He was like, "WHAT? Every body wants the NFL Sunday package." And I told him I wasn't interested in it because I wouldn't be watching it. He almost freaked out about it, said he could even give a small discount, I said NOPE, Not interested. He kept on and on, even after I told him I work Sundays and I'd be paying for something I wont watch. I thought the dude was going to cry, he must have been on commission. Makes me laugh now when I think about it.

Well over a year now, perhaps a year and a half with no TV and I just seriously don't miss it. Haven't read a newspaper probably since around the debacle that was 2020 and the Chinese Bat Flu fiasco.

That's a great idea! Thanks. But even so, I'm so fed up with the OWH, that I wouldn't sign up again even with a single use card. I know a lot of newspapers play this game, but has it ever occurred to them that this flawed business model might be one reason that newspapers are dying? If they had an easy in and out option like streaming services, more people would subscribe. I thought about contesting my last charge with VISA (which occurred after I sent the email to cancel), but it's not worth my time to recoup the money. I'd probably have to wait on the phone for another lengthy period and talk to another rep who is very sorry to hear that I'm having a problem. :Banghead:

I've had the same experience with OWH and lots of others. It is irritating beyond belief. So simple to sign up, impossible to cancel without spending all kinds of time doing it.

I think he writes pretty well and has some decent insights about a lot of things. I do think in the last few years he comes off a lot more negatively when he speaks of Nebraska football. I think he feels like he is some great talent evaluator when it comes to football.

You really can't get any great insight into how a team is coming together by watching 20 minutes of indy drills at the beginning of practice. Which is all any of the media get to see. Yet he sometimes likes do draw broad conclusions from it. He also always looks at other teams and finds their talent to be superior to Nebraska's. Nebraska really hasn't had talent problem the last few years, it has been much more of a "between the ears"problem.

Dirk isn't even writing for the OWH anymore. He quit sometime last year. Dirk was a great writer when it came to the long narrative piece about a subject or person. His day to day stuff was just okay. People really started disliking him because he was so confrontational with Bo Pelini in press conferences. He liked to get under BP's skin and knew he could do it.

Lee Barfnect thought he was writing for the Washington Post or NY Times. He thought he was being objective and even handed. He was always trying to sound neutral about things, but he came off as negative.

I respect your opinion on many many topics sir but no amount of fantasy will get me to believe that any of them have any credibility. I decided decades ago to avoid any and all writings by these three individuals that are or where paid to spout opinions. Each of us has a right to their own opinions on all things. I’m almost positive that you had no intention to trying to convince me about the quality of these individuals writings and I should somehow appreciate them. Failure 100%. I must add that I am NOT a fan of the media in general which certainly influences my opinion on the three turds. Love ya man. GBR

That’s a fair assessment. I really don’t have any way of knowing how accurate Mckewon is when it comes to analysis or talent assessment. But he writes very well and seems to have a knack for reading between the lines. I really enjoyed his pieces and that was the only reason I subscribed. I wish he’d start his own media platform and leave those losers at the OWH behind. It pains me to say that because I was a big fan of the paper when I was young. But now we are done.
