Huskers Take Six Titles at Central Nebraska Challenge​


"Nebraska track and field earned six titles on Friday at UNK’s Central Nebraska Challenge, hosted at Kearney High School. (Mostly Nebraska colleges)

On the field, Lauren St. Peters (53.20m, 174-6) won the discus title, Sage Burbach earned the women’s shot put event (16.15m, 52-11 ¾) and Kael Miedema rounded out the group with the men’s shot put title (17.08m, 56-0 ½). On the track, Sam Easley won the men’s 800m (1:51.47) and Deavion Deleon (2:17.85) won the women’s side, and Alea Hardie took the women’s 1500m title (4:43.11). "

"Seven Huskers on the Nebraska track and field team placed top five in their respective events on the first day of competition at the 44 Farms Invitational in College Station, Texas.

Keyshawn Strachan etched his name in school history, winning the javelin title, throwing 80.00m (262-5), the second-furthest mark ever by a Husker. Dash Sirmon (2nd; 76.36m, 250-6), Arthur Petersen (4th; 69.86m, 229-2) and Hayden Gorovitz (8th; 68.73m, 225-6) all claimed top-eight finishes.

Henry Zimmerman finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.95m (216-4). Seth Schnakenberg moved up to ninth in school history, throwing 63.07m (206-11), earning sixth. Brett Schwartz (59.81m, 196-2) and Max Herman (56.00m, 183-9) finished ninth and 17th, respectively.

In the women’s shot put, Kalynn Meyer finished second, throwing 17.44m (57-2 ¾). Kellyn Kortemeyer added another top-eight finish claiming eighth with a throw of 15.94m (52-3 ¾). Sage Burbach (14.40m, 47-3) and Lauren St. Peters (14.27m, 46-10) earned 19th and 21st.

Three Huskers ended the first day in the top 10 of the decathlon, with Adria Navajon leading the charge in fifth with 3744 points, including a first-place finish in the long jump (7.37m, 24-2 ¼). Brayden Bergkamp finished the day in sixth (3743), highlighted by a first-place finish in the high jump (1.98m, 6-6). Luke Noland sits in ninth, scoring 3713 points. "
 
The Nebraska track and field team wrapped up competition at the 44 Farms Invitational, as nine Huskers earned top-five finishes in their respective events.

Cade Moran led the way for the Huskers in the men’s shot put, throwing 19.58m (64-3) for the runner-up finish and the 9th-farthest in school history. Kael Miedema threw 17.37m (57-0) for the 13th-place finish and a new personal best.

In the women’s javelin, Maddie Harris finished second, as she threw 55.38m (181-8). Jenessa Ruder joined her in the top five as she finished fourth (51.43m, 168-8), and Emanuela Casadei placed 12th (45.73m, 150-0).

In the women’s 100m, Darby Thomas ran a personal-best 11.27 for the fourth-place finish and second fastest all-time in Husker history.

Brooklyn Miller finished fourth in the women’s high jump (1.72m, 5-7 ¾)

In the men’s pole vault invitational, freshman Dyson Wicker placed fifth, clearing 5.33m (17-5 ¾). Velecia Williams also finished fifth as she jumped 12.92m (42-4 ¾) in the triple jump.

Brayden Bergkamp, Adria Navajon and Luke Noland finished in the top eight of the decathlon as Bergkamp was fourth (7,121 pts.), Navajon was fifth (7,084) and Noland was seventh (6,944). Highlighting the day were second-place finishes by Noland in the 110mH (14.52) and Bergkamp in the javelin (56.37m, 184-11).

Three Huskers tied in the pole vault and moved into the all-time Husker list in 10th as Kylie Fox, Jacelyn Neighbors and Arina Razina all cleared 4.13m (13-6 ½) for ninth and 11th respectively.

Up next, the Huskers travel to La Jolla, Calif., for the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 16-18.

Not Nebraska track - but, I witnessed a race last night between the top two men's 4x400 relays in Division III. All three relay handoffs were side-by-side and the race was won by 16 hundredths of a second. (note that the winning time was 13 seconds faster than the Husker time noted in the post above. These guys were flying.

" Kellyn Kortemeyer, Jenna Rogers and Tyus Wilson won titles on the second day of the Michael Johnson Invitational as the Nebraska track and field team wrapped up competition Saturday afternoon.

Wilson earned the men’s high jump title as he cleared the second-highest mark in the country, 2.25m (7-4 ½). Reid Nelson finished second, jumping 2.17m (7-1 ½), the 15th-best jump this season. Desire Tonye Nyemeck (2.04m, 6-8 ¼) and Gerrit Twitero (1.99m, 6-6 ¼) rounded out the group of Huskers, finishing 12th and 18th, respectively. On the women’s side, Jenna Rogers won the title as she cleared the third-highest mark in the country, 1.88m (6-2), qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Karsyn Leeling jumped a season’s best 1.85m (6-0 ¾), earning second, and Brooklyn Miller and Ela Velepec both cleared 1.76m (5-9 ¼), finishing third and fourth, respectively. Riley Masten placed sixth, clearing 1.68m (5-6) and Rebecca Pecora finished 16th (1.58m, 5-2 ¼).

Kortemeyer was the third Husker to claim an event title, as she threw a personal-best 16.89m (55-5) in the women’s shot put, the ninth-farthest mark in Husker history. Kalynn Meyer earned second-place finish, throwing 16.70m (54-9 ½), while Sage Burbach claimed fifth with a 15.78m (51-9 ¼). On the men’s side, Maxwell Otterdahl earned a fifth-place finish with a mark of 18.75m (61-6 ¼). "
 

"Des Moines, Iowa - Till Steinforth scored the top world decathlon mark and Keyshawn Strachan threw a javelin school record as the Nebraska track and field team finished the second day of competition at the Drake Relays.

Steinforth set a new Drake Relays decathlon record with 8,265 points as he earned the 100m (10.65), long jump (7.90m, 25-11), shot put (15.28m, 50-1 ¾), 400m (47.96) and 100mH (14.09) event titles on the way to the decathlon win.

In the WACT men’s javelin, Strachan threw a school record as he claimed the event title, going 81.01m (265-9). Dash Sirmon also competed in the event, earning a fifth-place finish with a mark of 73.90m (242-5). On the women’s side, Husker alum Rhema Otabor claimed the win (58.20m, 190-11), and senior Maddie Harris finished fourth (56.50m, 185-4). "

Up next, the Huskers continue competition at the Drake Relays tomorrow with running events at 12:15 p.m. (CT) and field events at 1:30 p.m. (CT).

Wilson won his second event title as he cleared 2.21m (7-3). Mason Kooi (fourth) and Reid Nelson (fifth) joined Wilson in the top five, clearing 2.14m (7-0 ¼) and 2.10m (6-10 ¾) respectively.

Meyer improved her third best all-time mark in school history, winning the women’s discus with a throw of 57.96m (190-2). Lauren St. Peters added a sixth-place finish with a throw of 47.85m (157-0). In the women’s shot put, Kellyn Kortemeyer finished third, throwing 16.43m (53-11).

Ilves added to the event title count for the Huskers, earning the women’s long jump title with a mark of 6.34m (20-9 ¾).

Otterdahl finished second in the university division discus, throwing 55.34m (181-7) and Kael Miedema contributed an eighth-place finish with a mark of 52.66m (172-9). Otterdahl earned another second-place finish in the men’s shot put, throwing 18.44m (60-6) and Kael Miedema grabbed another top-eight finish, earning sixth with a mark of 17.26m (56-7 ½).

In the men’s 800m, Niko Schultz grabbed a third-place finish, running 1:50.40 and Hannes Fahl added an eighth-place finish, crossing the line in 1:52.93.

Desire Tonye-Nyemeck added another top-three placement to the Husker tally earning a third-place finish in the university division high jump, clearing 2.08m (6-9 ¾).

In the men’s 400mH university division, James Ledbetter finished third, running 52.11. On the women’s side, Abrielle Artley finished 13th, crossing the line in 1:02.08.

"Steinforth, a senior from Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, scored the top world decathlon mark last weekend in Iowa, setting a new Drake Relays record of 8,265 points. "Tucson, Ariz. - Five events titles were secured and multiple Huskers either improved all-time marks or broke into the list, as the Nebraska track and field team finished competition at the Desert Heat Classic.

Tyus Wilson earned his second high jump title of the season, clearing 2.23m (7-3 ¾). Mason Kooi placed seventh (2.06m, 6-9), and Desire Tonye-Nyemeck was 10th (1.96m, 6-5). The Husker women saw five high jumpers in the top eight, led by Jenna Rogers in second, clearing 1.84m (6-0 ½). Brooklyn Miller and Karsyn Leeling tied for third (1.79m. 5-10 ½), Riley Masten finished fifth (1.79m, 5-10 ½) and Ela Velepec was seventh (1.74m, 5-8 ½).

Kalynn Meyer tallied her second discus event title of the outdoor season, throwing 55.42m (181-10). Lauren St. Peters earned an 11th-place finish (47.27m, 155-1) and Amelia Flynt grabbed 14th (46.33m, 152-0). In the men’s discus, Brett Schwartz broke into the all-time Nebraska list in 10th, as he threw 58.79m (192-10) for the fourth-place finish. Three other Huskers finished in the top 20, as Maxwell Otterdahl was 11th (55.12m, 180-10), Kael Miedema finished 15th (53.82m, 176-7) and Cade Moran placed 16th (53.39m, 175-2).

Meyer then won her second title of the day, throwing 17.35m (56-11 ¼) in the shot put, and Kellyn Kortemeyer joined in the top five, finishing fourth and hitting 16.09m (52-9 ½). Sage Burbach placed ninth (15.06m, 49-5), and Lauren St. Peters (14.96m, 49-1). For the men, Cade Moran was the top Husker, placing fourth (18.88m, 61-11 ½), followed by Maxwell Otterdahl in seventh (18.40m, 60-4 ½) and Kael Miedema rounded out the group in 16th (16.19m, 53-1 ½).

The Huskers finished first and second in the women’s javelin as Maddie Harris took home the title, throwing 59.12m (193-11), and freshman Jenessa Ruder placed second (53.95m, 177-0). Five Nebraska competed in the javelin, led by Keyshawn Strachan (77.10m, 252-11) taking home the title, and Dash Sirmon (75.76m, 248-6) finishing second. Hayden Gorovitz (66.21m, 217-2) placed eighth, Brayden Bergkamp (54.04m, 177-3) was 17th and Luke Noland (52.93m, 173-8) was 20th.

In the women’s hammer throw, Cammy Garabian (61.53m, 201-10) led the way with a inish, followed by Hillevi Carlsson (fourth; 60.12m, 197-3), Kellyn Kortemeyer (eighth; 54.57m, 179-0), Ariel Ammentorp (ninth; 54.44m, 178-7) and Sage Burbach (12th; 51.55m, 169-1). Seth Schnakenberg finished seventh (61.40m, 201-5), Brett Schwartz was 11th (59.15m, 194-0) and Max Herman placed 12th (57.34m, 188-1) on the men’s side.

Two Huskers improved their top-10 school history marks in the women’s pole vault, as Kylie Clark-Fox finished sixth and moved up to third-highest ever, clearing 4.31m (14-1 ¾) and Arina Razina placed eighth and cleared 4.16m (13-7 ¾), eighth-highest all time. Aspen Fears rounded out the group in 17th (3.86m, 12-8). Dyson Wicker also found a spot on the all-time list as he cleared 5.55m (18-2 ½) in the men’s pole vault, for the third-place finish and the third highest mark in school history."

Ali Bainbridge improved her second-fastest 10,000m time in school history, as she ran 33:24.07 for fifth place and four team points.
Cammy Garabian also finished seventh, throwing 62.80m (206-0), a PR and the third-farthest throw in school history.

Eugene, Ore. - Maddie Harris and Jenna Rogers added to the Husker Big Ten title count as the Nebraska track and field team finished competition on Sunday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with both the men and women finishing in the top five.

The Huskers swept the high jump titles as Rogers won on the women’s side, clearing 1.84m (6-0 ½). There were four other Huskers in the top 10, as Karsyn Leeling was fifth (1.81m, 5-11 ¼), Brooklyn Miller finished sixth (1.75m, 5-8 ¾) and Riley Masten and Ela Velepec tied for 10th (1.70m, 5-7).

Harris became a three-time Big Ten Javelin Champion, throwing 58.38m (191-6) for the win. Jenessa Ruder joined Harris in the top eight, finishing seventh (49.12m, 161-2).

In the men’s discus, Maxwell Otterdahl threw a person-best 59.12m (193-11) to improve his ninth-best mark in school history and finished third. Cade Moran also earned points for the Big Red as he finished fifth (57.59m, 188-11). Kael Miedema was 16th (52.42m, 172-0), and Brett Schwartz was 25th (45.15m, 148-1).

Kalynn Meyer and Kellyn Kortemeyer scored points in their second event of the weekend, as Meyer threw 17.43m (57-2 ¼) for fourth and Kortemeyer hit a mark of 16.87m (55-4 ¼) for eighth. Amelia Flynt was 11th (15.95m, 52-4), Sage Burbach finished 15th (15.55m, 51-0 ¼) and Lauren St. Peters placed 18th (14.44m, 47-4 ½). "

"Javelin throwers Maddie Harris and Eniko Sara were the first Huskers on Thursday to qualify for Eugune. Harris finished fourth, launching 56.82m (186-5), and Sara was seventh (54.73m, 179-6).

Nebraska increased its qualifier count to nine throwers overall as Kalynn Meyer and Kellyn Kortemeyer finished in the top 12 of the women’s shot put. Meyer threw a personal-best and fourth-farthest mark in school history (17.96m, 58-11 ¼) to place second, while Kortemeyer finished 11th, throwing 16.71m (54-10).

Two Huskers ran personal-best marks to qualify for Saturday’s finals as Darby Thomas improved her second-fastest time in school history (11.26) to place 17th in the 100m and Kelsie Belquist moved on in the 400m, running 52.99 for 24th. Berlyn Schutz also advanced to Saturday’s 1500m finals, as she clocked a 4:20.79 for 24th place.

In the women’s long jump, Lishanna Ilves jumped a season-best 6.35m (20-10) but it wasn’t quite enough as she finished 13th."

" Berlyn Schutz broke the 1500m school record as the Nebraska track and field team qualified two more athletes to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, bringing the total to 13 after four days at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Schutz qualified for the NCAA Championships as she ran 4:11.01 in the 1500m to finish fourth, set a new personal best and etch her name in the Husker record books. Jenna Rogers also punched her ticket to Eugene, her eighth career NCAA trip, clearing 1.84m (6-0 ½) in the high jump. Four other Huskers competed in the event as Karsyn Leeling was 14th (1.81m, 5-11 ¼), Ela Velepec cleared a PR 1.81m (5-11 ¼) for 15th, and Brooklyn Miller and Riley Masten tied for 24th (1.76m, 5-9 ¼).

Darby Thomas ended her Husker career on a high note as she set a PR in the 100m and improved her second-fastest time in school history, 11.24, to place 16th. Kelsie Belquist competed in the 400m finals, finishing 21st and clocking a 53.33, and Ali Bainbridge ran 16:25.13 in the 5000m for 13th and Berlyn Schutz ran 16:59.03 for 42nd.

Velecia Williams jumped a personal-best 13.19m (43-3 ¼) to finish 17th in the triple jump.

"Nebraska track and field opened the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field with four athletes earning All-America honors.

Javelin school-record holder Keyshawn Strachan garnered his second-career first team honor tonight, placing fifth with a distance of 76.44m (250-9). Arthur Petersen joined him in the top eight of the javelin, throwing 75.50m (247-8), and claiming his second first-team recognition and fourth all-america honor overall. Dash Sirmon rounded out the group, finishing 14th (69.17m, 226-11) and becoming a three-time all-american.

Till Steinforth competed in the first round of the decathlon, sitting in 21st place with 3330 points. He placed third in the long jump (7.38m, 24-2 ½) and fifth in both the 100m (10.72) and the shot put (14.68m, 48-2)."

Nebraska men’s track and field wrapped up the 2024-25 season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., with seven all-america honors.

Senior Maxwell Otterdahl became a seven time all-american as he placed 16th in the shot put, throwing 57.07m (187-3). Otterdahl ended his collegiate career as a two-time first team all-american and three-time second team all-american.

In high jump, the Huskers saw two athletes earn all-america honors as Tyus Wilson finished his Husker career as a five time all-american, clearing 2.20m (7-2 ½) for sixth. Freshman Desire Tonye-Nyemeck claimed his first career all-america award, finishing 11th and clearing 2.15m (7-0 ½).

The Husker men finished 35th with 8.5 team points.
