I went in 2016. Fun environment but a bit overrated to me. It's loud but it's also built down into the ground with a large overhang to keep noise inside the stadium. Seemed kind of gimmicky (similar to the Seahawks home stadium). Fan base was very friendly and overall, it was a good experience. I wouldn't put it toward the top of any CFB "must do" list though. The traditional powers still have much much much better game days to me.

Also, I think Otis Day may be retired, but I bet a few here could put together a decent Shama Lama Ding Dong cover!
Drive a little further east and you can check out Salt Creek falls. It is a spectacular spot...slightly different than the sewer treatment outflow pipe on Salt Creek in Lincoln

Perhaps Ducktown can speak to this, but I imagine getting a room in Eugene on Friday or Saturday during home games can be difficult.
I generally stay at the Graduate if I am in town for court, and they are always booked for game week Friday and Saturday. That is where opposing teams usually stay. Last year I was in town for the Minnesota game and even though they were in the hotel, you would not know it...Fleck runs a very tight ship...can't say that for other teams that have stayed there.
If I was traveling to the game, I would fly into Redmond, stay in Bend and take the 2:45 drive to Autzen on gameday, unless it is night game. But I am also partial to Bend and try to avoid Portland as much as possible!

Re Portland: we spent a day there, and I found it to be a beautiful city with great coffee (way better that Seattle), great food and a great bookstore. To each their own. 
I had a friend who moved out there about 20 years ago. She had the same feelings that you do. I can't speak to how busy hotels get on a game day, just because I don't have to rent a hotel room since I actually live here.
That being said, the Gordon and The Graduate are two of the nicer hotels downtown. If you're looking to save a few bucks check near the Gateway Mall area in neighboring Springfield. There's a bunch of Best Western / La Quinta style places, and they have a shuttle bus that goes directly to Autzen Stadium so you can avoid the hassle of parking.
Side note, if you are going to do any shopping the major areas are Gateway Mall in Springfield and Valley River Center in Eugene. There are a few other upscale places scattered throughout town such as Oakway. Enjoy the lack of sales tax while you're here in Oregon. If you're overly ambitious, drive 90 minutes up the road to Woodburn Outlet mall.
Also, Autzen Stadium is cashless which includes parking, so make sure you bring your debit card or digital payment method. There's also a clear bag only policy, so no bringing large backpacks and such into the stadium.

What is NU's record when you attend away games? I have been to 52 Husker games in my entire career. (home & away). NU is 46-6 when I attend in person.
