O line or RBs?

I'm worried about our run game - is the O line not getting a good push or are our RBs missing holes? Last week was iffy, this week was worse. Colandrea's scrambling ability is fun to watch, but I don't like that he was our leading rusher today (last week too?). That's going to bite us eventually.

I think Maryland's D line was crashing our O line harder than what we've seen, and it disrupted the blocking schemes. Hope Geep gets on them and gets this corrected.

I also think we miss Jamal Rule. Mekhi did way too much dancing in negative yardage territory. Much of that was due to holes not getting opened.

Athletic O line plus athletic RB.
Rule is the game changer

Yep, Rule doesn't dance as much. It appears that the other guys dance less when he plays. See him do it and do the same.

Considering how open our receivers were constantly, I think they were committed to stopping the run

Short answer? Both. I think we missed Rule a lot today.

We had 208 yards rushing with a 5.8 yard average per rush. Not terrible. They sold out to stop the run, and the only real negative was AC was a bit off today on his passing. Otherwise we would have won by an even bigger margin.

The stats look better after 4 quarters. First half rushing was a definite concern. IU won't give us a half to figure it out.

I feel like it’s not so much “push” as it is not getting to the second level. Opposing LBs are getting to the run gaps. I also think our two RBs don’t have that one “make ‘em miss” move. EJ last year had the jump cut and Rule has the strength to make that first tackler miss.

I also wish we’d run more misdirection instead of straight power. Make it difficult for opposing LBs to read the play.

The thread topic is running backs and the line. You quoted rushing statistics of 5.8 yard average. Our Running backs had a total of 101 yards today on 27 carries.
If you want to say 5.8 isn’t terrible what is your opinion on the factual 3.8 by the running backs? You can’t sugar coat how bad the running back game was today. I realize we were missing our top back…..at least I think he’s our top back. He’s been injured most of the season

I say we need our top RB healthy and in the game.

It’s been a little fools gold so far. Run game looked good early (bad competition) and the holes are smaller now. They are going to get even smaller moving forward. QB run game will be imperative next week I think.
That's concerning too. I think Lateef is absolutely serviceable but Colandrea is one of those types that can elevate the players around him. If he gets himself hurt this team could slide downhill fast.

This is pretty much most teams if they lose QB1. You could make an argument NU is in a better position than most at the QB spot, with 3 guys who’ve started at this level. Ohio State likely falls off some if Sayin goes down, same for Texas or most anyone else.

If your game involves running to help make you effective, then you need to run him, regardless of risk of injury. Do your best to avoid big hits( there is an art to that). If you don’t run him for fear of injury, you’re taking away a huge weapon. Run him.
