NU 2018-2019 Wrestling season

The Nebraska wrestling team faces a challenging schedule in 2018-19 that features 13 of the top-25 team finishers from last year’s NCAA Championships, where NU finished ninth after tallying 47 points.
Nebraska posted a 12-4 dual record in 2016-17, its seventh consecutive winning season and 28th winning season in the last 30 years.

Nebraska features a 37-wrestler roster as it begins official practice.
  • Over two-thirds of the Huskers’ 2017-18 roster are underclassmen, as 26 of Nebraska’s 37 wrestlers are either freshmen or sophomores.
  • Included in Nebraska’s roster are also four seniors and seven juniors
  • Fifteen Huskers on this season’s roster are returning letterwinners
  • This year’s Huskers come from 16 states, and 11 are Nebraska natives
My guess at who the 5 Nov starting lineup will be:

125: Kris Williams
133: Jason Renteria
141: Chad Red
149: Colton McCrystal
157: Tyler Berger
165: Isaiah White
174: Mike Labriola
184: Taylor Venz
197: Eric Schultz
285: David Jensen

Interested to see how we do, the team doesn't get a lot of attention but has been a decent squad for years and with Greene and Burroughs at the elite level, maybe we can get some higher profile recruits.
I am interested to see how Berger and McCrystal fair this season.

TOM’s College Wrestler of the Week – Nov. 6th: NU RSFreshman - Taylor Venz!

"After a 28-4 redshirt season, there were high expectations for Taylor Venz (Nebraska) as he entered the lineup at 184 pounds. On the opening weekend of the season, he looked unstoppable...."

Also this just posted about him on Friday:

9) Taylor Venz, Nebraska, 184 – 13 matches, 7 falls, 2 techs, 1 major, 2 decisions, 1 loss, 62 team points, 4.769/match

After Venz pinned his first four opponents in Vegas, including a pair of ranked foes, he had 56 team points over the first 10 bouts of his redshirt freshman season. Myles Martin (Ohio State) cooled him off a bit, dealing the Cornhusker his first loss of the season, 19-4, and Venz won a pair of decisions after that against top-10 opponents. Though that hurt his statistics a bit, there is no question he’ll take the wins any way he can get them.

Looks like he might be a good one to watch for a few years

Is anyone watching this dual with the Illini? I can't figure out what's going on with this squad--been to a couple duals at Devaney and watching this one we look soft and tentative. Now down 0-6 after two.

I didn't see it but agree I am more than a little disappointed in how some of our key wrestlers have been performing. Chad Red, Berger and Venz to name a few. Doesn't seem the are mentally or physically prepared for their matches. Appears something is going on......

NCAA All Freshman Team: 2 from NU. CONGRATS

141; 3rd Team: Chad Red, Nebraska – 7th in the Big Ten, 7th at NCAAs

Taylor Venz, Nebraska

When he notched three falls and a 17-1 tech on the opening weekend of the season, Venz earned wrestler of the week honors and declared his intent to be a factor at 184 this season. Though, oddly, he didn’t secure another pin after getting his seventh in Vegas, he never stopped winning. Taylor was fourth in the Big Ten tournament behind three of the top-five wrestlers in the country, including the top two. He headed to Cleveland as the seven seed and despite a second-round upset at the hands of Chip Ness (North Carolina), the Cornhusker worked his way to the round of 12. There he faced four-seed Pete Renda (NC State), a past All-American who had beaten Venz, 9-6, in mid-December. This clash would go very differently as the redshirt freshman rolled to an 11-3 major decision to secure his spot on the podium. He wasn’t done, though, as Taylor would win his next two matches, over nine-seed Max Dean (Cornell) and six-seed Zack Zavatsky (Virginia Tech), ultimately finishing fourth, the same position he found himself in at the Big Ten tournament. In all, Venz went 29-9 with 19 of those wins including bonus points.
