2027 - NIU, UNI, Miami OH
2028 - Arizona, UTEP, SDSU
2029 - Oklahoma
2030 - Oklahoma
2031 - Arizona
2034 - Ok State
2035 - Ok State


The article suggests we haven’t played P4 opponents … aside from this year and next we’ve always had one P4 on our schedule. We’ve played CU and OU quite a bit the last decade or so.

I'm not sure I buy the bit about respectable losses. "Respect" is too subjective. You may argue we should have run up more points against Houston Christian, but you can't take the W away. You may argue a one point loss to Oklahoma is "respectable," but it's still a loss. "Almost always almost win" doesn't get you in the playoffs or to a bowl game.

Full disclosure: I'm one of those curmudgeons that enjoys blowout wins.

I thought I recognized you from the curmudgeon meetings.

I loved the blowouts also. I wanted the blowout to be in place by halftime, so after the first series of the 2nd half, we could see the 2s, 3s, and 4s, to see if they could extend the blowout.

But where we are now (and have been for a couple of decades), I want to see the starters prevent being blown out, and snatch a win where we weren't supposed to have a chance.

Then we can get back blowing out the competition.

I think our non-conference schedule is fine. Given the level of play in the Big 10 and the current state of college football, I think you need 3 full scrimmages. We just don't have the national respect right now and our level of play has been mediocre at best.

Now if they expand the playoff, then it makes sense to schedule one difficult opponent each year.

I'm ok with 3 non p-4 non conference games but would drop the FCS schools. I think if we did a Pac, Mountain West and Conference USA schedule wouldn't be bad 1) Utah St 2) Air Force 3) Missouri State or 1) Texas St 2) Colorado State 3) Jacksonville State would be 3 half way decent home games before the Big 10 schedule. Nobody wants to see Fordham or Houston Christian games.

I’d argue the Northern Iowa, SDSU, North Dakota, Houston Christian games should be the first to go.
  • We need one P4 contest - home and away.
  • A second game, presuming it can always be a home game, against a PAC, MW, C-USA team.
  • A third game, presuming it can always be a home game, against a MAC, Sun Belt team.
We should at a minimum be able to go 5-1 over those games as the B1G will always be brutal. That’s how Iowa and Wisconsin inflate their records even in down years.

We are pretty much guaranteed at least two killer games per year alone in B1G play. There also really isn't anyone left in the conference that is just a complete pushover, year-in and year-out. Back in the Big XII days we'd have years of playing Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and then potentially another down conference opponent. Feels like a rarity to face a conference opponent anymore that is downright bad (also doesn't help that we aren't incredible, either).

Realistically, if we miss the playoff because our schedule is too weak, I'll be happy that we were even in the conversation to make the playoff.

It wouldn't surprise me if there ends up being some sort of SEC/B1G crossover game, like they do in basketball with different conferences, in the very near future. Pair that with a couple of cupcakes and I think our schedule would be more than adequate.

It's definitely nice to not go into the 2nd half of a game every once and a while, not wondering if we are going to blow a lead or be embarrassed.
 
The best thing that has happened to the Huskers other than winning national championships is moving to the Big Ten conference. The quality of play is better. The players being recruited are of higher caliber although that took more than a few years. The thing that is missing frankly is we haven't been able to get a real Big Ten coach. Rhule is the best so far of course but he doesn't stand out when compared to the perennial winners in the conference. He seems to do recruiting pretty well but the between the lines part of the game has not been great. His game plans are repetative, give the ball to Emmett 30 times or Raiola passing to one or two guys. It just hasn't worked. He doesn't seem to be able to find the weakness in the opponent and attack it like the upper level coaches do consistently in our conference.

I would like to see us eliminate games against FCS programs (North Dakota, SDSU, UNI).

I would like to lift the scheduling of the non-P4 games up slightly. Schedule PAC, Mountain West, C-USA, Sun Belt, MAC teams. These two games need to be against teams who will travel to Lincoln for a payday but are also capable of winning their conference.

Legit blowouts. Haven’t had those since Osborne really, at least on the regular.
