Left tackle Nick Gates had nation's best run blocking grade against Fresno State

Nick Gates' first career start at left tackle couldn't have gone much better.

Gates was named to Pro Football Focus's Team of the Week for his performance against Fresno State. Per PFF, Gates had the nation's best run blocking grade and didn't allow a pressure in 15 attempts.

The Huskers ran 51 times with an average of 5.7 yards per carry against the Bulldogs. That's with a retooled offensive line that had a different player in all five positions compared to last year's team.

Gates started 10 games last season at right tackle before making the move to left tackle this year. Dylan Utter was the only other returning starter, moving from left guard to center. Tanner Farmer (left guard), Sam Hahn (right guard) and David Knevel (right tackle) all made their first career starts Saturday.

Performances like Gates' on Saturday is part of why the Huskers are confident in the run game, and why it's here to stay this season.

Also receiving recognition from PFF was Husker corner Chris Jones. He landed on their Big Ten Team of the Week. He had an interception, pass breakup and tackle against Fresno State. His interception came on the Bulldog's final offensive play.
