New Omaha Radio Affiliate

Any chance 590 just didn't want it anymore?

My understanding is 590 didn't want to renew and KFAB doesn't want the contract again. The only other viable option would be the NRG stations, like 1620 The Zone, but those are already booked with Creighton and Omaha so they'd have to flip all of that to take on Nebraska, which they don't want to do. That meant the new kids on the block (tongue in cheek because "Boomer") were about the only option remaining.

Not a shocker to me

I will chalk this up as another strike to the Husker Athletic Department taking broadcasting in-house. They don't have the clout or experience to deal with these things once every few years. If memory serves me correctly, they were about to outsource it again in the recent past, but the project got pulled at the last minute.

The Husker AD can outsource concessions; this should be the same, and be better off being outsourced. Bringing it in-house has not been a win IMO

Doing some searching, and I do not even see an official press release on this by the Athletic Department. Am I just missing it?

What I was looking to see was if there was a mention of the length of the agreement. I do not see it mentioned anywhere in any of the third-party coverage of this change, nor do I find any reference to a press release.

My quotes came directly from a release that was shared with me. I believe the Boomer socials shared it as well, but that was it. Here it is.

The Huskers Radio Network hasn't been in house for a few years. Playfly took over as the multi-media rights holder on a 15 year deal effective October 1, 2022. I also think this is more about the Omaha market and affiliates available/wants than it is HRN and whether or not it is in house or outsourced.

Yep most folks, including me, don't keep their internet technology up with the internet's capabilities. I'm sold on the "mesh" systems, not that expensive, we have the main TP-Link Deco Mesh transmitter in a room central in the house, and "booster" transmitters in the master bedroom and office. Works like a champ even great signal in the back yard. It's not the most modern WIFI (WIFI 7) but it's 6E and plenty enough for us. If you have a dead spot in the house somewhere, the "satellite" transmitters can be purchased seperately.

;)

Considering all of the years that KFAB did the UNL broadcasts, not to mention how many years 590AM has done the broadcasts most recently, what is it about broadcasting UNL games that has become so toxic, that no one wants to be involved? I'm sure money has a lot to do with it, but I'm curious about the details. Is UNL demanding too much money (if so, how did a small broadcaster pull it off)? Are the people involved too difficult to work with?

I just want to understand what is going on with this situation. Is this just something more that is taking the fun out of college athletics?

After reading the press release, I learned something that I didn't understand before. Here is the press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - University of Nebraska, Play Fly Sports, and Walnut Media Announce Partnership to Broadcast Husker Sports on Omaha's Boomer Radio Omaha, NE — June 17, 2025

The University of Nebraska, in collaboration with Play Fly Sports, is proud to announce a five-year partnership with Walnut Media that will establish Boomer Radio as the new Omaha affiliate for Husker Sports. Starting July 7, 2025, Husker fans can tune in to Boomer 1490AM and 97.3FM to catch live broadcasts of Husker Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, and the nightly talk show Sports Nightly. In the event of scheduling conflicts, broadcasts will air on KCRO 660AM. Husker Football programming also will air on 660AM KCRO. To enhance accessibility, Walnut Media will also launch a dedicated Husker Sports stream available on the MyBoomerRadio.com app, ensuring fans can stay connected wherever they are. “We are honored and excited to serve as the Omaha affiliate of the Husker Sports Network,” said Steve Seline, Chairman of Walnut Media. “The popularity and success of the Men’s and Women’s sports teams, along with the incredible leadership of the Athletic Department, gives us great hope for the continued growth of the program and the fan base. As a local, family-owned company, we understand the importance of the Husker Athletic program and are very proud to enter into this partnership. ”This partnership underscores the commitment of all parties involved to bring the excitement and tradition of Husker Athletics to Omaha’s loyal fans. With Walnut Media’s extensive reach and dedication to local programming, the collaboration ensures comprehensive coverage of Husker Sports for the Omaha community and beyond. Senior Associate AD Brandon Meier said, “Nebraska Athletics is proud to partner with Walnut Media to bring Husker Radio programming to the Omaha area. Their commitment to make all Husker Athletic programming a priority is a tremendous asset to our fans in all sports. ”Walnut Media’s Fremont stations, Big Dog 98.9/1340 and The Best Mix 105.5 have served as the Fremont Husker Affiliate for the past 25 years. Walnut Media, a local, Nebraska-based media company, owns and operates Boomer Radio in Omaha and Lincoln, The Best Mix 105.5 and Big Dog Country 98.9/1340 in Fremont, Omaha Christian Radio KCRO, Bluffs Country 106.5/1420 in Council Bluffs, Performance Podcast, Boombox Entertainment, and Performance Digital.

After reading the bolded, I realized KCRO 660AM will carry the football games (KCRO 660AM reception here in the house OK, Not KFAB clear, but not bad). I didn't have that information when I made my first post in this thread. For me, this means football game days are saved. Hallelujah!!!!! This also means, since KCRO is a Christian radio station, that this year, Nebraska football has a prayer. ;)

Now if I can get Walnut Media to broadcast Men's and Women's Basketball and Volleyball on KCRO 660AM, my ability to hear Nebraska Athletics will be right with the world.

Thank you for responding to my rants.

KFAB seems to be content with what they are doing and being an affiliate becomes programming that will impact programming on every day of the week. ESPN Radio has been going through a ton of issues so it could be more of that than what the 590 folks are doing or wanting to do locally. Being an affiliate does come with a cost, but if demand in the market is low then I'm sure the Walnut folks negotiated a good deal for themselves.

Thank you for the info. It helps calm my conspiracy instincts. ;)

I do have internet. And it works well in one room. Where I had access to listen to the games in the past in the entire house (while accomplishing other things in other rooms during the game) I'm now limited where I can hear the game. At this time, I'm not prepared to spend extra funds to make the computer work throughout the house.

Maybe the Athletic Department wants more people log into their system and have it crash on game days. That would be fun.
what brand of wireless router do you have?
